The primary variable in the experiments that Elliot and Niesta conducted was the color present in certain photographs. However, the comparisons went far beyond simply contrasting red with black and white. The researchers conducted a series of five experiments. In the first, they compared reactions to a photo containing red with one that did not, and asked participants to indicate who they found more attractive. The second experiment examined whether red specifically influenced the attractiveness "rating" given by participants. In experiments three, four, and five, comparisons were made between red and other color combinations, including both chromatic and achromatic images. In other words, discernible colors other than red were used in some alternative photos, while others were entirely black, white, and gray (Elliot & Niesta, 2008).
Sample and Methods
There were 27 men in the first experiment, and they were not able to determine what precisely was being measured. This meant that the Hawthorne effect was ostensibly kept in check, at least to an extent. For the second experiment, there were 63 participants with an almost even split between men and women. The third experiment was men only and comprised 37 subjects. The fourth experiment replaced gray (the non-red color used in experiment three) with green and included 31 male participants. The fifth experiment was similar to the fourth, except the chromatic alternative to red was changed from green to blue. Assignment to each experiment was completely randomized (Elliot & Niesta, 2008).
Conclusion
Some people may read too much into the details of life and engage in a bit of navel-gazing. However, something as simple and tangible as color psychology is one of those things that genuinely affects human behavior, regardless of how basic it might seem. Just as music and art stir thoughts and feelings within us, this study makes the case that color — and color alone — does precisely the same thing, and that conclusion makes perfect sense.
