The survey and regression model found that graduate and doctoral students slept an average of six hours per night, and 62% self-reported experiencing "good" sleep quality. This article analyzes the sleep habits of nursing students and whether those habits have any predictive power for academic performance. The study employed a cross-sectional observational design in which the authors created their own questionnaire using the Morningness–Eveningness Scale, supplemented by socio-familial and academically focused questions tailored specifically to nursing students. The overall sample consisted of 401 students enrolled in nursing programs across 24 states.
Similar to the other studies reviewed, roughly 60% of nursing students were characterized as having good sleeping habits; however, approximately one-third were characterized as having poor sleeping habits. The researchers determined that poor sleep habits were partially correlated with lower academic performance. The authors acknowledge, however, that other variables may potentially exert a greater influence on nursing student performance, including teacher competency, institutional culture, and broader social factors surrounding the student.
The advantage of this study is its specific focus on nursing students, as opposed to a much broader student population. This focus can also be a limitation, as the findings may not be relevant to other disciplines that are generally less demanding in terms of time commitment and stress. The narrowness of the sample reduces the generalizability of the conclusions beyond the nursing context.
