The shock they experience when hearing the news makes them less determined to hear other diagnostics, given that they consider it futile and extremely difficult for them to try to consult other doctors. People were not previously aware of ADHD and as a consequence had no other choice but to go to a therapist when there was nothing that they could do in order to temper their children ("Agony of Not Knowing" 24). Whereas this might seem to be extremely unfortunate for most of present-day ADHD supporters, it was actually better for individuals that would most probably be diagnosed with ADHD in the present. Because they were not immediately labeled with a disorder, people could benefit from prolonged psychological or psychiatric treatment that was more likely to benefit them.
