56-57). There are also medicobiological explanations which are based on hormonal or chemical addictions or imbalances (Hague and Malos, pp. 56-57). Sociological explanations also exist which claim that domestic violence is a result of "genetic imperatives" (Hague and Malos, pp. 56-57). It is important to note that all of these explanations tend to excuse the violence and do nothing to support the woman (Hague and Malos, pp. 56-57).
There are also 'socio-structural explanations that assume it is a result of societal stressors such as job loss, lack of money, housing, etc.' (Hague and Malos, p. 58). 'This does not explain the fact that domestic violence is almost always man on woman or the fact that it exists across all social classes' (Hague and Malos, p. 58). There are those who explain it as a breakdown of the family (Hague and Malos, pp. 58-59). These are the moralist explanations (Hague and Malos, pp. 58-59).
Finally, there are the feminist explanations which hold that domestic violence is a based in male dominance (Hague and...
59-62). Many hold that it is because of the power differential between men and women which is sanctioned by society (Hague and Malos, pp. 59-62). Others hold that' it is not the unequal distribution of power, but the power itself' (Hague and Malos, pp. 59-62).
Historically, all of these have made it difficult for the woman to get help and reactions differ depending upon the degree of violence and the social standing of the people involved (Hague and Malos, pp. 62-63). Typically, the woman is blamed if there is something wrong within the household even if the "wrong" is the fact that she is being beaten (Hague and Malos, pp. 62-63). Recently, 'some professionals are allowing that the crux of the problem is the "abuse" of power but only feminists assert that it is the "power" itself' (Hague and Malos, pp. 62-63).
