In the article titled the Elderly Living Along in Need of Support Services, it discusses the life of IP So Hing. She is a 72-year-old woman that lives in Hong Kong. Who has no one to support or provide her with any kind of assistance. As her husband died over ten years ago and she has no children or other relatives to count on. The combination of these different factors means that Mrs. So Hing is vulnerable to a number of different issues. This is because of a lack of support including: financial and a readily available resources. At the same time, she is reluctant to rent out a room in her a 400 square foot apartment and she is malnourished. ("Elderly Living Alone in Need of Support Services," n.d.)

Unlike many of the 100,000 elderly people who are living along in Hong Kong, Ip was able to receive help from the Hong Kong Society for Community Organization (SOCO). This is a human rights group that reaches out to those who are most vulnerable in society. The way that this is accomplished is through having a series of different booths throughout the city. During the day, is when a large number of senior citizens are outside walking around. Volunteers will be able to go to these places and learn more about the kinds of services available. This information is important, because it is showing how there are number of different ideas that can be extracted to highlight the current plight of many elderly people in Hong Kong. To fully understand what is taking place requires conducting an appraisal analysis. Once this occurs, is when we can have better understanding about what challenges are facing this demographic. An Appraisal Analysis

When you step back and analyze the situation of the poor, it is clear that there are a number of different issues. These include: the attitude, the positive / negative sense and the modality. As far as the attitude is concerned, Ip is has similar opinions of many individuals inside her age group. Where, she wants to be seen as someone who is independent and capable of taking care of herself. Yet, she no longer has the ability to do so and will only seek out help when it is an emergency. This is troubling, because it means that she is vulnerable to: malnourishment, financial and health issues. As, this can be seen throughout the article with: a particular emphasis in the beginning. The positive / negative sense is when the article is highlighting how there is a major problem that is impacting the elderly inside Hong Kong. However, it is also illustrating the way that various non-profits and other organizations are reaching out to these individuals. This is important, because it is showing how there are entities and volunteers who are trying to make a difference. The real key moving forward will be, if other organizations and individuals will become involved in helping to tackle the problem. ("Elderly Living Alone in Need of Support Services," n.d.) This can be found when they are talking about Ip's situation in the beginning (by highlighting the negative). What at the same time, it is illustrating how she was able to find help (which is showing the positive) at the end of the article.
