¶ … colonization of France in North America Colonization of France in South and Central America begin under the kingship of King Francis I, when he heard of Spain and Portugal finding wealth in the lands of Central and South America. He ordered a French navigator, Jacques Cartier, to explore a land where French people can get better trading opportunities. He made three journeys. The purpose of these journeys were to explore North America, of the legendary lands, famous for their gold mines and other valuable minerals. His first attempt to find gold and other minerals was a failure along with his efforts of colonization. Quebec city, one of the provinces of Canada was at that time a village called Stadacona. There, Cartier happenstance to meet a group of hunters known as Iroquoians. These were tribe of five nations; Cayugu, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga and Seneca and therefore are commonly known as Five Nation Iroquois. Their tribal lineage continued from a woman. Infact, it was their women who had the right to consent leader for their tribe.

On this first expedition, Cartier somehow missed the St. Lawrence river. To find this river and explore its territorries, he set out on another expedition to North America. He sailed up to the present day Montreal, then known as Hochelaga and tried to trade with the Hochelagans but they seemed less interested in the European goods although they treated Cartier and his men with warmth and friendliness but that was not what Cartier wanted so he went back to France.

The third time when cartier came to france was with an honorable man named Jean-Francois de La Rocque de Roberval. It was after five years of his second expedition. He was ordered to find a stable neighborhood for French people. He went along with a group of criminals;...

Of all the people in France, the observation of King Henri IV for Spain and Portugal finding improved opportunities on the land of North America made him more willing for the expansion of French trade. To accomplish his plans, he made a deal with a protestant soldier, De Monts, that he would establish French colonies in North America and in return Henri IV will grant him control of trade for 10 years. De Monts accepted the deal and with a group of 78 colonists, Samuel de Champlain amongst them, went on the St. Croix river edge to spend a winter. They consumed their days and nights for finding the best trade possibility for France . Agriculture, they decided was not suited for the region they lived in therefore both De Monts and Champlain perceived France as an improved opportunity to increase their fur trade. Another important prospect for the improvement of the fur trade were the Natives because they were the only people who knew from where the fur animal could be found. By this time, north shore of the St. Lawrence river became the focal point for French in North America. Quebec was also formed during this period.
