I agree that there is a reason that the SWOT model has survived for so long as one of the most useful ways of understanding a company’s competitive position. It offers an analysis of both the company’s internal and external position, encouraging decision-makers to be self-critical, but also to be aware of what competitors are offering and the general state of market competition (David, et al., 2020). After all, a company can be performing at a high level, but if it does not take into consideration other competing organizations that are providing comparative or superior value, it cannot rest assured that its target market will continue to seek out its products and services. I also agree that the structure of the SWOT allows the company to take into consideration issues such as environmentalism and ethics, and encourages it to set new goals for itself through constant self-evaluation.

Peer Discussion 4

I agree competitive advantage is very important, given the fact that consumers in most industries have a great deal of choice of both products and services. There are very few products where there are only one or two organizations offering highly desirable offerings. Fast food, soft drinks, cars, and appliances are some examples of common purchases where consumers have not only a wide array of brand choices, but also many substitute goods. A good organization will be able to justify why consumers should make a point of going out of their way to ask for the brand. I also agree that product diversification is important, given it is very difficult to sustain a company with only one or two products, or even with a very narrow base of customers, however loyal. Even if the company offers a niche product, offering a wide array of such products will increase the likelihood of the firm surviving.
