Manhattan and Charlotte are two bustling cities in the United States that attract millions of visitors every year. While they share some similarities in terms of their uptown urban environments that combine high-rise towers with nightlife and community, they also have some differences when it comes to crime rates, education, cost of living, and access to healthcare. Similar in some ways, these two cities are also worlds apart in others. In this essay, I will compare and contrast Manhattan and Charlotte in terms of the factors that make them alike and unique by highlighting characteristics of each city.

One of the most significant differences between Manhattan and Charlotte is their crime rates. Manhattan used to be tough on crime during the Rudy Giuliani days, but in recent years, regulations and policies have changed and crime rates have spiked. But Charlotte is not much better with a violent crime rate of 34.3. Yet, Charlotte has a property crime rate of 53.6, compared to Manhattan’s of 31 and a US national average of 35.4. So when it comes to property, Manhattan is actually more secure than the average US town and far more secure than Charlotte. It is only if you ware walking the streets that you are more likely to get mugged in Manhattan.

Another factor that sets Manhattan and Charlotte apart is education. Manhattan is home to some of the best universities and colleges in the world, such as Columbia University and New York University. These institutions offer top-tier education and attract students from all over the world. In comparison, Charlotte has several reputable universities and colleges, including the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Queens University of Charlotte. However, the education system in Charlotte is not as robust as in Manhattan (Kreznor). Manhattan has a lot of attraction for people looking for high culture (it has museums galore, art houses, Broadway theater, and more). It is simply unbeatable when it comes to having access to a wide variety of educative experiences.

Additionally, one of these cities is definitely more costly to live in than the other—and that is Manhattan. It is more than four times more expensive to live in Manhattan than it is to live in Charlotte, if one factors in expenses like housing, transportation, food and entertainments costs (Cost of Living Calculator). For example, the average price of a three bedroom, two bath home in Charlotte is around $350,000; in Manhattan, it is around $2,300,000 (Cost of Living Calculator). Rent in Charlotte is around $1,400 a month; in Manhattan, it is $4,600. If one is working remotely, one would likely not be able to make up the difference if living in Manhattan. That is why salaries are typically higher in Manhattan. But there is one area where costs are lower in Manhattan than in Charlotte, and that is in health care. In Manhattan, it is actually cheaper to get health care (slightly) than it is in Charlotte (Cost of Living Calculator). So if one is going to weigh the costs, one might find that Manhattan has its benefits and drawbacks, just as Charlotte does. In the end, it all depends on what one is looking for in a city.
