In order to increase the company's performance, it is necessary to develop an effective internal communications structure. In his "New Study: How Communication Drives Performance" article, John Baldoni, a leadership specialist, reveals that effective internal communications maintains employees' interest in the business and helps companies retain talented and productive people, create value for its products and services, and improve its financial performance (Baldoni, 2009).

The article is based on a communications survey conducted by Watson Wyatt that has revealed the fact that effective communications directly influences courage, innovation, and discipline within the company. This is because effective communication ensures alignment of employees' activity with the objectives of the company. Therefore, Cassidy should focus on developing a communication plan that is supported by frequent updates of the intranet, blogs, email, in order to receive feedback from employees, to allow them to communicate their problems, and to inform employees about the evolution of the company.

This way, employees would be ensured that the company is interested in their opinion, which would lead to an increased interest from employees regarding their activity. In addition to this, Michael Reichard advices to select a proper marketing mix when communicating the company's messages to the staff. The most frequently used channels identified by the author in his "Internal Communications: Planning the Plan" article refer to supervisor to employee, employee to employee, small meetings, large meetings, letters and memos, video, email, bulletin board, special events, and newsletters (Reichard, 2009).

The selection of the communications channel depends on the message, on the receiver of the message, and on its effects. In Westwood Publishing's case, Cassidy should use emails and newsletters in order to communicate the company's plan to its employees, and smaller meetings in order to discuss important issues with department managers. Another article refers to the fact that effective internal communication starts at the top.

The authors of the article are trying to say that senior executives must increase their interest in developing an effective communications plan (Gray & Robertson, 2005). The writers advise managers to become more visible to their subordinates, to inform them about the directions that the company is intended to follow, and to consult their subordinates about strategic changes within the company.

Therefore, Cassidy should focus on developing an effective communications plan with the company's managers and to encourage them in improving communication with their subordinates by involving them in the decision making process.
