When firing or releasing employees it is very important to remember the humanity of the situation and present an honorable and distinguished front when relaying this information to subordinates and those soon to be fired. In this example, nearly 20% of the staff will be informed of their termination at this meeting. To accomplish this meeting in the best way possible it is wise to understand the entirety of the situation.

In any meeting it is important to build rapport with the audience and seek to communicate at their current level of emotional and intellectual understanding. In this case, the situation will no doubt be awkward and many emotions may be running high due to this stress. It is of the utmost importance and highest priority to uphold the dignity of those being fired and demonstrate care and respect. Bad feelings are sure to come about, so it is important, that as a leader a calm and cool approach should be administered when delivering this bad news.

It should be expected that many complaints and gripes will be revealed during this meeting, and it is important as a leader conducting the meeting, not to get emotional and remain professional and respectful, no matter what is said. Attentive listening followed by empathetic action would serve any leader well in this situation. The format of such a meeting should be formal as possible to distract from angry and disgruntled employees who may be tempted to overrun the meeting as a result of their firing.

The effectiveness of this meeting will not be fully gauged until later, when those who did not get fired react either positively or negatively. Effective communication suggests that a clear and precise message was received, this will be known after the meeting and a new sense of normalcy has been adopted with the newly formed, lessened staff.

Question 2

As a member of Congress I would certainly vote against any bill that would restrict the amount of greenhouse gasses that may be released in the atmosphere. For me, this political action is against my personal ethics and does not represent my own views on the subject. As a member of congress, my personal ethics complicate the matter as well. As a representative of other people in government, it is my duty to represent their views and opinions. In some ways my personal ethics on the specifics of the subject do not matter in the truest form of a representative democracy.
