Meta-Analyses
The selected study (Dalenerolle et al., 2021) sought to determine whether race influenced the risk of gestational diabetes and related mental health disorders among ethnic minorities. The findings showed a sequelae of gestational diabetes with mental health disorders among minority ethnic groups, supporting the hypothesis that Asians, blacks, and other ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected (Dalenerolle et al., 2021).
Dekkers (2018) defines a meta-analysis as a formal, quantitative study design in which one combines related studies that answer the same research question into one design and uses statistical analyses to draw conclusions from the design. The selected study exhibits several features that make it a meta-analysis. First, the authors use standard eligibility criteria to integrate 14 eligible studies into one data set that they analyze using statistical processes to reach their finding. Eligible studies are non-randomized or randomized controlled trials (RCT) published between November 1995 and November 2020 and analysing both psychiatric comorbidities and mental health syndromes (Dalenerolle et al., 2021). The researchers use sensitivity analysis, subgroup analysis, and random effects to calculate 95 percent confidence intervals and odds ratio to establish prevalence (Dalenerolle et al., 2021).
Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria
The study clearly states its inclusion and exclusion criteria. The inclusion criteria dictated that studies have a mental health outcome in addition to gestational diabetes. Further eligible studies were required to specify a BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) group and be published in English (Dalenerolle et al., 2021). Studies were excluded if they lacked a mental health outcome, were unpublished or published in languages...…finding because multiple studies have already shown that blacks, Hispanics and other ethnic minorities have higher risks of developing diabetes (Hill-Briggs, 2021). According to Hill-Briggs (2021), this is due to socioeconomic factors that place minorities at a disadvantage through poor nutrition and lack of proper exercise-related infrastructure in their neighborhoods.
Impact on Professional Nursing Practice
The study supports the relevance of culturally-sensitive care in the professional setting. This involves recognizing the biological, physiological, and physical variations that influence different patients exposure to illness.
