1. Math is my strong suit. I enjoy the methods used to solve the problems, knowing that for every problem there is a right way to approach it. You can go back and check your math to see if it’s correct. With other subjects, there is sometimes less certainty. History, for example, allows for multiple interpretations—sometimes to the extent that events or stories remain clouded or shrouded in mystery. In science, there may be theories that are developed to try to explain certain phenomena, but in the end many things remain unknown. Math is precise and exact, and in math you are either right or wrong and I really like that aspect of it.

2. I would really like to improve my American English. I was born and raised in Grenada and have only been in the United States for a month at the time of this writing. I speak English but have a slight Caribbean accent and I would really like to be able to speak it more fluently so that my classmates and teachers can understand me.

3. I love to play sports. I am fairly tall for my age and am really good at basketball. In my school in Grenada, I was ranked No. 2 in all-around athletics. I also enjoy playing the piano and am currently taking lessons to improve my playing.

4. All-inclusive love means to me that love should not have any limits. Love is something that is open to all, and that means that opportunities should be given to everyone. Love embraces everybody and everything because it sees the good and the potential for growth. For me and my family, the idea of all-inclusive love is what gives us hope and confidence and the inspiration to want to succeed. As for why I would like to attend Fontbonne Hall Academy, both my mother and big sister went to girls schools: both are Catherine McAuley graduates. I would like to continue in the tradition of strong women in my family. Attending an all-girls school like Fontbonne Hall would help me to develop into a strong young woman and allow me to focus on my number one priority, which is education.

5. It can be very difficult for young women to achieve their full potential in a coeducational school. With the impact of peer pressure and the perceived need to conform to popular opinion and thinking and ways of behavior—including the desire to be accepted—girls can feel overwhelmed and become distracted from advancing their education. In an all girls school, a young female student can devote time and energy to the things that matter. The “noise” and distractions that exist in a coeducational school are not a factor. Fontbonne Hall Academy is where I want to learn because it offers a great environment for young women: it is supportive of things I want to do, like taking on challenging math and science subjects and engaging wholeheartedly in serious sports. Fontbonne Hall is the perfect place for me to pursue my goals.

6. When I moved here from Grenada just over a month ago to be adopted by my new parents and begin a new life in the United States, I faced the challenge of getting familiar with a new setting and with new people. There can be a lot to fear, such as not knowing what will come or how things will be. I overcame this challenge by relying on my love and patience. I have support from my new parents and my big sister. Together we are a family and that means we share in each other’s struggles and joys, and that makes this transition easier for me, too. I recognize the promise of a brighter future that awaits us at the end of this journey and that fills me with hope and courage.
