Job Satisfaction vs. Big Five Traits Over the last several years, the workplace has been continually evolving. This is because there are different age groups and demographics. These shifts are forcing employers to utilize numerous strategies in order to improve motivation and performance. In many case, the personality of the individual will have an influence in determining their success. (Cherry 2013) (Bass 2006) To fully understand they way this occurs requires carefully examining how these variables are interconnected.

Together, these elements will illustrate the way employers are able to utilize them to continually adjust with the challenges they are facing. Personality and job satisfactions are directly related to each other. Job satisfaction is when an employee will have positive or negative attitudes related to their work. This has an impact on their underlying levels of organizational commitment. Organizational commitment occurs after an individual feels a sense of respect, fairness and is willing to go the extra mile for the firm.

These factors are interconnected, as both have a direct impact on the person's outlook, levels of motivation and if they will do more for their employer. This study is seeking to understand the way the two are connected using five key traits (i.e. openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism) and the correlation with job satisfaction. (Bass 2006) Research Overview Job satisfaction is looking at how the person feels about their employer and the influence this will have on their attitudes.

These areas are interconnected as the two will influence the way this person performs and their ability to reach key objectives. Once someone has established favorable views, is the point this will make them more dedicated to the company in the longer term. This is when they are willing to help the organization achieve key objectives and is utilizing their talents to enhance its performance. There are a number of personalities which are influenced by job satisfaction differently.

The most notable include: Openness: This is when an individual has an attitude geared towards learning by embracing cooperation and flexibility. Conscientiousness: This involves the person having a deep, detail orientated and focused personality. Extraversion: This is when someone will push their feelings inward or outward to express themselves. Agreeableness: These people are more friendly will use this to shape the way they interact with others. Neuroticism: These individuals are very calm, relaxed and in control of their attitudes / beliefs.

Research Significance The research is showing how there are different factors which influence the person's level of motivation in conjunction with their personality. For example, Maslow's Theory of needs is focusing deprivation and growth. Deprivation occurs at the lower ends of the spectrum under this model. The most notable include: psychological, social, esteem and self-actualization. Growth takes place when the basic needs are met and the individual wants to have something that will help them to be more fulfilled as a person. Addressing the most basic requirements (i.e.

psychological) will lead to the individual wanting to have a sense of accomplishment in their lives. (Cherry 2013) (Bass 2006) Hertzberg's Theory.
