Lesson Plan
The purpose of this project is to provide ESL students an opportunity to learn enhanced listening skills. These skills, once they are acquired, will assist the students in assimilating into the American culture through the use of language which contains a means for communicating in a comprehensive and understandable manner.
Many times ESL students are overwhelmed with information that could help them, but with which they have difficulty due to the fact that they have not acquired the listening skills which will help them in the classroom, and in the society in which they have chosen (or their parents chose) to interact. Being a new student can oftentimes be a harrowing experience, and when it is coupled with the fact that the new student is also new to the country, this scenario can become further complicated causing even more difficulty for the student. Since the number of immigrants entering the American educational facility grows larger every year, it makes sense to determine if teaching these students additional listening skills will assist them in acclimating themselves to the American culture as well as the educational system.
The rationale of this project is to provide ESL students with listening skills that they may not have already acquired in their previous educational efforts. It is hoped that by doing so, some of the pressure to become acclimated to the educational environment with which these students must interact will become a less demanding scenario. In addition, the learning of these skills will assist these students in not only becoming acclimated, but will also assist them in learning and comprehending the English language in a shorter and more timely manner.
The research base of this project considers the needs of ESL students regarding how the acclimate themselves (through the use of the English language) in the American educational system. The research will help the researcher to determine if these efforts to teach the listening skills are efforts that will enhance the student's abilities and learning process.
The projected application of this project will be in a classroom of ESL students seeking to learn the English language. The teacher will be provided with time during each class period to address listening skills; what they are, how they work, and how they will be beneficial to the students not only in their efforts to learn the English language but will also be beneficial in their other classes, as well as in their day -- to -- day activities as well.
The projected outcomes for this project include: additional listening skills acquired by each student, the skills learned will enhance the student's assimilation into the educational environment, and the teacher's will benefit from having more attentive students in each of the classroom environments, not just the ESL classroom. The students will also acquire more direct language skills due to the fact that they have learned what it means to really 'listen'.
