Comprehensive Early Literacy Experience

Teachers and educators are constantly faced with the need to make instructional decisions depending on their knowledge of every learner. The process entails consideration of every learner's entry point into a certain instructional experience, evaluation of the learner's experience, and constantly changing the instruction to enhance the learner's achievement. This has led to the development of different instructional measures in attempts to enhance students' achievements. A comprehensive approach to literacy instruction means that students or learners must be good readers and good writers. This approach incorporates aspects of meaning-based and skills-based techniques through two components i.e. reading and written expressive language (Neuhaus Education Center, n.d.). The benefits of this blended approach include providing students opportunities to read and write, ensure learners have direct instruction, ensures necessary skills are taught, and enables students to develop accuracy and authenticity.

Parts of the Reading Workshop

The Reading Workshop is described as the framework for reading instruction that provides learners with a supportive learning environment in which they are engaged in authentic reading experiences that emphasize on the strengths and needs of every individual learner. There are four major parts of the Reading Workshop i.e. mini lesson, independent reading time, share time or closing conversations, and read aloud (Newingham, 2009). Mini-lesson is developed depending on what is known about the students and their needs since the topic or skill is not something the students are familiar with. While the time for these lessons differs, they are usually quick i.e. 10 minutes. With regards to independent reading time, students read books of their choice since they are not restricted to their directed reading or small group books. Moreover, students' choices during this time should not be based on their reading levels but reflect a broad range to texts. The reading workshop time should be ended with whole-class conversations or discussions, which emphasize on sharing skills or strategy and lessons gained by readers. Read aloud is a component that takes place beyond the boundaries or structure of the reading workshop and focus on strengthening understanding and creating strategies for independent reading. The benefits of this approach include allowing learners to spend more time in reading, providing opportunities for discussions about literature, and developing life-long passionate readers.

Forms of Assessment

Assessment can generally be described as a continuous process that focuses on understanding and enhancing learning. There are different forms of assessment that are generally classified into ongoing and on-demand assessments. On-demand assessment refers to assessment processes that occur as scheduled events beyond the normal routine. In essence, it's a form of assessment that seeks to summarize lessons students have learned though it's not entrenched in normal classroom activity. Some examples of on-demand assessments that might be used in this comprehensive approach to literacy instruction include multiple-choice questions, open text response, and type in short answer questions. In contrast, ongoing assessment is the procedure of offering students clear responses to their performance with regards to understanding to help improve future performances. Some examples of ongoing assessment that might be used in this comprehensive approach to literacy instruction include writing an effective persuasive essay and surveys for collecting information.

Enhancing Literacy Experiences of Special Needs and English Language Learners

One of the most important features in the early childhood classroom is accommodating all children in relation to the specific needs. This process requires making necessary modifications or accommodations to enhance their literacy experiences. Special needs children require the accommodations or modifications since the existing educational practices are designed for normal students. Some of the most important modifications or accommodations for special needs children to enhance their literacy experience include individualized instruction, use of alternative teaching materials, providing specific encouragement and praise, creating an adaptable learning environment, and utilizing different teaching strategies. These modifications or accommodations are necessary because some of the needs of these students include memory problems, poor motor skills, difficulties in concentrating, and hyperactivity.

English Language Learners experience significant challenges since they are faced with the need to learn language and learn content simultaneously. As a result, they encounter numerous problems in various content-area courses like science, social studies, math, and literature. In essence, the needs of English Language Learners are effective strategies towards learning language and learning content at the same time. In order to achieve this, teachers or educators need to make some accommodations or modifications that enhance their literacy experiences. Some of these modification or accommodations include using graphic organizers when teaching, allocating these learners reading partners, offering explicit systematic instruction in content areas, exposing learners to rich language input, and providing scaffolding (Ford, n.d.).
