Mixed Methods Study Design What's Wrong with Mixed Methodology

Morris and Burkett (2011) witnessed the relatively recent emergence of what has been called "mixed methods" research. A study using a mixed methods design would meet both quantitative and qualitative evaluative criteria. From the author's perspective and that of others cited in their publication, quantitative and qualitative research designs are effectively mutually exclusive. The only concession that Morris and Burkett (2011) seemed to allow was a study design where qualitative and quantitative were used in a complimentary fashion, essentially conducted side-by-side.

The two competing perspectives discussed by Morris and Burkett (2011) in their publication were (1) both study designs could be combined effectively if the appropriate research methods were used and (2) the controversy is overblown and getting in the way of research. The authors, however, did...

They searched the CINHL database for nursing research articles containing the string 'mixed methods' and evaluated the study designs actually used. They discovered that most studies that claimed the use of a mixed methods design were in fact primarily quantitative in orientation. The qualitative aspect of these studies was limited to the inclusion of qualitative research methods, but failed to meet the qualitative study design criteria of inductive reasoning, dynamic reality, small sample, and immersion of the researcher into the study. By comparison, most studies met the quantitative design criteria of deductive reasoning, fixed reality, larger samples for randomization, and researchers detached from the reality experienced by the study subjects.
Morris and Burkett (2011) concluded that the majority of mixed…

This large number was selected to ensure that the power of statistical tests used in the study is of sufficient power to draw valid conclusions. It is expected that given the sensitive nature of the subject, there will be large numbers of selected participants who will decide not to participate, will drop out, or whose parents will not sign the consent form. All participants selected will be taken from

Conclusions: The friendship environment affects suicidality for both boys and girls. Female adolescents' suicidal thoughts are significantly increased by social isolation and friendship patterns in which friends were not friends with each other. (Am J. Public Health. 2004; 94:89-95) Adolescent well-being is largely the product of interactions among the multiple contexts in which, adolescents are embedded. Central contexts for adolescents include family, school, friendships, romantic relationships, peer groups, and

Companies frequently fall in love with the data-rich results and think that the results are projectable. This supposition is wrong. Projectabilty is not possible, as the analysis is slanted and deals with a small size. Another general misapprehension is the belief that qualitative research will always give perfect deductions. Actually, the results will not give companies with perfect deductions, but only with adequate information to set up a firm

Scientific Method & Fundamentals of Research Research is a crucial part of our lives, regardless of whether it is to find a cure for a disease, or simply write an essay. Even simple questions that a person wants answered can be keyed into the world wide web, found in a library, or even a bookstore, involves performing research. It is true there are a many scientific approaches one can use

Employee Satisfaction And Productivity employee satisfaction and productivity ASTRACT Employee satisfaction directly links to organizational excellence and/or productivity. Maybe… Maybe not… Researchers regularly debate exactly what components contributing to employee satisfaction and the company's and/or organization's productivity. Similarly, employers and employees do not typically agree on the reason/s an employee stays committed to a company or what factors contribute to an employee's satisfaction with the company. During the mixed-method case study, the researcher focuses
