Problem Solving
People are usually accustomed to performing similar activities every day, and, when they come across a certain difficulty, their brains act accordingly and take over. A mental process known as problem solving intervenes in an instance when people encounter trouble in their daily lives. Problem solving is considered to be the most complex of all intellectual functions, as it happens only when an artificial intelligence system or an organism has the desire to move from a given status to a goal status.
Being one of the essential human cognitive processes, problem solving has been given a great deal of attention during the last hundred years. The matter has gotten even more attention during the last few years, as it is now in the spotlight of the researchers' world. Even with the fact that most researchers are relatively acquainted with the issue, they still have trouble making precise observations of mental processes. This may be mainly due to the fact that the most common methods used to study problem solving processes cannot be considered to be exact.
Scientists have come up with numerous approaches in order to study cognitive processes over the years. A most common approach chosen by researchers to study problem solving is to have problem solvers say their thoughts aloud as they deal with the problems. Researchers carefully analyze the behavior performed by problem solvers in order to discover fundamental processes.
This particular method of studying problem solving processes can seriously affect the participants during the experiment. Because of the fact that they are pressured to say their thoughts aloud, the subjects' abilities to solve the problems might be altered.
Another method employed by researchers is to ask problem solvers to look into the actions that they had performed during a previous problem solving process. This method is usually used to confirm the conclusion made by the researcher during problem solving episodes.
Clearly, the results of studies performed through such methods cannot possibly be taken for granted. Moreover, the presence or the absence of the cognitive process cannot be determined with proximity during a problem solving study.
Certain problems can be easily solved with the help of insight, as people can sometimes almost suddenly understand a problem or find a solid strategy to solve the respective problem. Even if most people believe that insight is just a coincidence, it is in most cases an earlier strategy conceptualized in a different way. Solutions found to problems which are not necessarily difficult to solve do not qualify as being insightful. People are only believed to solve problems through insight in the cases when they initially have doubts concerning their success in solving the problems.
Creativity is also of great importance during a problem solving process, as creative individuals have greater chances of solving a certain problem. A creative individual is generally characterized by unconventional behavior and uncommon attitudes.
