Tiberus, son of Octavius, was given the powers of a king (though not the title) upon the death of Octavius, and Rome never went back to a Republic form of government.
Many experts feel that if the system had continued on in the same manner as it was conducted before Julius Caesar, then we may all be speaking Latin today. Instead the overwhelming power that can be attained by one individual led to many revolts, assaults and murders in order to obtain that power.

Living in an environment of that type often leads to the demise of government and it certainly had that type of effect on the great Roman Empire.
