Death Penalty

The death penalty is not very relevant as punishment for some crimes as it is so little given these days: there were only 10 federal executions in 2020, which, as hard to believe as it may seem, is actually more than triple the number completed in the previous 42 years (USA Facts, 2021). Plus, on top of that, state executions have been trending downso that shows how irrelevant the death penalty has really become. Yet crime persists, and if 2020 showed anything it was that crime seems to be bursting out and breaking out everywhere, with lawlessness in the streets, lootings, riots, and police being defunded. The argument that the death penalty serves as a deterrent may be flawed, but in a socially just system the death penalty does at least represent a kind of justice that needs to be served. The problem here is that the criminal justice system, like the health care system, has been commoditized with for-profit private prisons and companies working together to make money off prisoners and their cheap labor in the prison-industrial complex, as it is now called (Schlosser, 1998).

Should the death penalty be more relevant? Perhapsbut then again justice has be served faithfully and with a view toward social justice. If justice is biased or if the system is so flawed that innocent people are wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death, one has to oppose the system and its sentencing until the system itself is rectified. Thus, instead of focusing on the death penalty, the first thing to do is address the flawed nature of the system, as it has been corrupted by bias and for-profit groups who are more interested in outsourcing labor to prison camps (as they now seem)so why sentence anyone to death when that person can just be made to work for pennies on the dollar for US firms? The problem is not the death penalty per se; rather, the problem is the way the system operates now.
