While a first look on the collection of books is probable to provide someone with the feeling that it is easy to read and does not involve a lot of strong feelings, the truth is that this is what the writer intended it to look like. Not only is this more than a collection of stories, as it is actually very similar to a novel containing deep psychological ideas meant to have a strong effect on virtually anyone reading it. All things considered, most readers coming across the collection of stories are probable to agree with O'Brien in thinking that war is not only damaging because of the physical damage it causes, as it is also destructive from a psychological point-of-view.
