¶ … Transition Education and Services One of the common challenges for educators and parents of special needs children is the being able to provide them with the assistance they require. This is because during the course of the student's educational career is when they will go through three critical stages including: preschool to elementary, elementary to secondary and secondary school to adulthood. To assist the students in achieving a host of objectives educators will work with parents in creating what is known as an individual education program (IEP).

This is when there is a customized learning plan that is created for the individual student. The basic idea is to work with them in achieving reachable goals and then help the individual to achieve them. On the surface, this approach is supposed to help the student deal with a host of challenges. However, the reality is that anyone of the three transitions can be difficult for the individual. This is when strategies must be implemented to address these issues.

To determine the best ideas for helping students requires providing specific recommendations that can be used in these transitions. Good communication must occur between the educator, parents and student. The reason why is during any kind of transition is when the student will face added amounts of stress.

This is because at key moments in the life of the child, is when their lives will be effected by transformations at the new stage. The key during this process is to have everyone understand the challenges and work with the student to overcome them. This means spending more time communicating about what is happening and how everyone can work together to deal with all issues. Once this takes place, is when the student will be able to adjust to new transitions that are occurring. (Bakkan, 2008, pp.

40 -- 56) Technology is another issue that will have an impact on how the student is able to deal with these transitions. In most cases, educators will focus on providing more technology and working down (once the student has adjusted). The problem with this basic strategy is these techniques are not teaching students to be independent. Instead, they are using the technology as a crutch for not becoming independent. To avoid these kinds of issues means that another approach must be taken.

In this particular case, educators need to have students master the basic skills before utilizing technology. This will help them to grasp the core concepts and then use these ideas when operating various tools. (Bakkan, 2008, pp. 40 -- 56) Evidence of this can be seen with observations from Bakkan (2008).
