Introduction

The new business venture I will evaluate is Bike Gear Shop which aims at providing safety gear and accessories to motorcyclists across the United States. The first Bike Gear Shop (BGS) outlet will be situated in New York City aiming to attract a wide range of motorcyclists who cruise in the city. A study by Chaudhuri et al. (2019), to investigate the trends of motorcyclists’ fatalities and risk identification, concluded that fatality rates among motorcyclists increased across all age groups. The results of the study indicated the need to improve motorcycle safety among people of all ages. Given the capital base required to start the business, I will start with one outlet at the New York business district and later expand as need and demand for the safety products grows. The business will have two broad programs including the sale of safety accessories and second, the sale of spare parts for motorcyclists.

The business buyer persona is made up of three groups of people. The first group is bike racers and the second group are young bikers between the ages of 25 and 45 who are working and earning an income of between $60,000 and $150,000 annually. The third group is made up of enthusiast and people who enjoy biking.

SWOT analysis

According to data from Statista, the global motorcycle market was estimated to grow from over 133 billion U.S. dollars to 136 billion USD in the year 2023 (Statista, 2023). The US’s motorcycle market estimated a revenue of 6.24 billion USD by the year 2022. The motorcycle market has been experiencing a growth trajectory as time goes by. The Bike Gear Shop (BGS) aims to leverage the policies set aside by the United States government to keep motorcyclists safe. US policies require motorcyclists to be visible on the road by wearing bright clothing or bright helmets (Buckley et al 2016). Motorcyclists are also advised to gear up before every ride. Riders are also mandated to have motorcycle insurance to help them get insurance in case of any accidents. Below is a SWOT analysis for the business. The analysis will provide insights to the business on what to leverage to make sales and improve revenue.

Strengths

Affordable pricing of products- BGS aims to provide better prices for safety gear compared to competitors. This will be employed as a market entry strategy

Location- The business venture’s first outlet will be located at New York City targeting the affluent private motorcyclists who consider safety a necessity. The market positioning will aim at attracting similar customers to those of their competitors (Andromeda motors, Bohn body armor, Cycle Wear and Dainese).

Competent staff- The venture plans to hire one staff member to assist in selling of products. The said person is well versed in motorcycles operations and maintenance – having been employed by a competitor for a period of 7 years - and will therefore ensure that all the needs of clients are secured.

Weaknesses

Lack of sufficient resources- BGS is a local startup that will rely on the limited capital available.

Relative inexperience of owners on aspects relating to national/global motorcycle marketplace, making it difficult to predict key trends.

Scaling challenges- Despite the positivity for the business to grow, the venture is still uncertain on how it will scale up its operations in the future.

Opportunities

Growing pool of motorcyclists- Given the current market changes, there is a growing pool of motorcyclists in the United States. This is as a result of relative ease of purchasing motorcycles compared to motor vehicles. This means that there will be need and demand for safety gear and spare parts for motorcycles. This consequently spurs business growth.

Leveraging technology to make sales- Given technological adoption in the market, startups such as BGS aim will focus on the opportunities presented by the Internet of Things, i.e. with regard to sale of the various products. It would be prudent to note that the internet makes it easy for enterprises to reach out to more people within a larger geographical region. This is unlike has been the case in the past where businesses have had to almost entirely rely on ‘brick-and-mortar’ locations. to reach out to a wide range of motorcyclists.

Financing opportunities- Given the nature of the business and the market positioning, the business could attract financiers to assist in growth and expansion efforts going forward.

Government policies- This business venture will leverage friendly government policies to pursue its mission. The government requires motorcyclists to wear safety helmets, boots, body armor and reflector clothes. Policies of this nature could be utilized to advance BGS’s agenda going forward.

Threats

Market competition- BGS is likely to experience competition from existing motorcycle gear shops. Some of the competitors include, but they are not limited to, Dainese, Jane motorcycles, Andromeda motors and Bohn body armor. These businesses have huge capital bases. It is also important to note that the said enterprises have been in existence for a longer period, and therefore have better perspectives of the market as well as more experienced staff.

Tough economic conditions- The business could fall victim to the uncertainties of the economy, especially given that in an electioneering period, change in regime could bring about uncertainty.

Government policies- There are a wide range of concerns on this front that could prove counterproductive. A good example could new compliance guidelines that have the potential to affect business operations.

This analysis has enabled me to understand the core competencies of BGS. I have understood that a startup can become sustainable if the owner is well conversant with the market. There is need to understand the competition in the market, the prices offered by competitors, market trends and consumer preferences. I have also learnt that government policies play a major role in the success or failure of a business. For instance, regarding BGSS, we already have in place government policies that require motorcyclists to wear safety gear. This could be beneficial from the onset as far as the operations of the business are concerned.

I have also learnt that there is a need for businesses to prepare for various uncertainties, such as tough economic times, as these cannot be avoided. Available evidence indicates that startups are prone to fail within the first 3 months. The relevance of adequate preparation cannot, thus, be understated. As a result, there is need to think of sustainability going forward and set up systems and structures to ensure that sales targets are achieved, and accountability is enhanced.

Financial Plan

The amount of money allocated for the business is $30,000. This money was sourced from five-year savings, as well as from family. The money will cater for purchase of startup stock, pay for rent, and pay for the shop attendant. Table 1 below will act as an income statement, with future financial projections for the business.
