Writing a persuasive essay is different from other types of academic writing.  Rather than simply presenting facts, you are trying to convince the reader to agree with your opinion or position on a topic.  The topic of psychology is extremely broad.  There are several different types of psychological theories, and each of these theories have several subtypes.  They also have different degrees of support among psychologists, so you could pick one of those theories or sub-theories and use it as the basis for a persuasive essay.

To help you with writing your persuasive essay on psychology, we are going to supply some potential topics you could explore in the essay.

  1. As society advances and becomes more accepting of the transgender community, incidents of gender dysphoria should decline because the disorder is more of a result of social conditioning than internal conflicts.
  2. While it has become popular for people to call others a narcissist, few of the people accused of having the disorder would actually meet the clinical definition of narcissistic personality disorder.
  3. The decline in mental health that accompanied the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the willingness of people to believe in conspiracy theories, most notably Q-Anon.
  4. Legalizing marijuana would actually contribute positively to the problem of addiction because many addicts are self-medicating for undiagnosed illnesses that would respond positively to supervised medical uses of marijuana.
  5. Because both male and female students perform better in single-sex schools, schools should be segregated by gender.
  6. There is no such thing as a person who is completely evil.
  7. While mental health is often blamed for the high number of mass shootings in the United States, the fact that the shooters are almost always white males suggests that other factors, such as race and gender, are responsible.
