The theory addresses the complex layers shaped by both biological and environmental factors, and argues that the breakdown of any one of these layers will produce a rippling effect throughout the child's development.

The environment in which a child is raised is extremely important. A child's interaction with their environment begins simply and eventually grows more complex. As the child develops physically and cognitively, their relationship with their environment becomes even more intricate. The fundamental belief of Bronfenbrenner's theory is that stability is critical in the child's environment. Children need a stable relationship with their parents or primary caretakers. When that stability is disrupted, the child may begin to seek attention in inappropriate ways.

In Bronfenbrenner's theory, the two most important variables are the individual and the environment (Darling, 2007). Children depend on the stability of their microsystem and mesosystem to support healthy development. The microsystem comprises the immediate relationships and environments the child directly experiences — such as family, school, and peers — while the mesosystem encompasses the interactions among those immediate settings. Both layers must function cohesively to nurture the child's well-being.

Stability, Incarceration, and Foster Care Disruptions

Research by Poehlmann et al. (2010) found that the stability of the microsystem is extremely important to a child's development and well-being. Children whose parents are incarcerated are affected in multiple ways: they lose a parent's presence, they are often relocated from their homes, and they face an overall destabilization of their environment. The disruption and separation of the family unit creates a significant impact on both the development and well-being of the child. It also alters the mesosystem, further compounding developmental challenges.

Similarly, children who are removed from their homes due to abuse or other adverse circumstances are frequently placed in foster care — and often in multiple foster homes.
