This paper presents a market research study examining the readership of Cosmopolitan magazine, focusing on demographic variables such as age, location, occupation, and income. Drawing on a structured questionnaire administered to readers, the study identifies that the core Cosmopolitan audience consists primarily of women aged 20β35, many of whom are students or early-career professionals. The paper outlines the key factors driving magazine purchases, summarizes survey findings, and develops a position matrix and positioning statement. Based on the results, the author proposes strategic recommendations to broaden the magazine's appeal across wider age groups while maintaining its identity as an "actual, active, and attractive" lifestyle guide.
This study examines the readership of Cosmopolitan magazine, with particular attention to the demographic variables and purchase motivations that define its core audience. A case study was conducted in Sacramento, California, between October 19 and October 22, 2006. It was also observed that most readers are between 20 and 35 years old and are either students or at the early stages of their careers.

As predicted, the greatest portion of Cosmopolitan's readers (80%) are between 20 and 35 years old, and the majority of those (55%) are students or members of the upper social class. Furthermore, 75% of respondents read the magazine regularly, while only 25% do so occasionally. More than 70% consider the current format preferable, and 30% noted that there are too many advertisements.[1]
What appears evident from these results is that Cosmopolitan has succeeded in being "actual, active, and attractive."[2] In the author's view, the magazine faces two strategic choices: either to focus exclusively on readers aged 20β35, or to publish content accessible to women of all ages and professions. When weighing these options, it should be kept in mind that Cosmopolitan is already the most popular magazine among young women β a fact confirmed by this study, in which 80% of interviewed participants read it regularly.
These findings are consistent with broader research on women's magazine readership, which consistently identifies younger, urban, and educated women as the dominant consumer segment for lifestyle publications.
