Introduction

From the outset, it is important to note that a number of issues continue to threaten environmental stability. These include, but are not limited to, rising ocean levels, globalization, civil wars, global pandemics (such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic), and lack of educational opportunities in developing nations. Given the finite nature of resources, stakeholders ought to focus on the most serious threats at any given time. The two threats considered most serious here are: (a) the use of fossil fuels as an energy source, and (b) insufficient educational opportunities in developing countries.

In addition to assessing how these two issues impact the global environment, this paper highlights the role that humans have played in aggravating these threats. Finally, the various measures that stakeholders could embrace in efforts to mitigate the impact of these threats on the environment are also explored.

Effects on the Global Environment

The negative effects that burning fossil fuels has on the environment are well documented. Fossil fuels include natural gas, crude oil, and coal. Denchak (2018) points out that in addition to harming human health, burning fossil fuels is harming the environment. Specifically, burning fossil fuels has been linked to global warming, since the combustion process produces massive amounts of carbon dioxide. This gas traps heat in the atmosphere, resulting in global warming, which has been linked to changing weather patterns across the globe (Butler, 2016). These changing weather patterns have been associated with droughts that are not only longer but also more intense. Climate change also contributes to the melting of glaciers and the rising of sea levels (Butler, 2016).

Another serious impact of burning fossil fuels is air pollution. As Denchak (2018) notes, numerous gases and particles are emitted when fossil fuels are burned, including sulfur dioxide and mercury. More specifically, Denchak (2018) states that "coal-fired power plants singlehandedly generate 42 percent of dangerous mercury emissions in the United States, as well as two-thirds of U.S. sulfur dioxide emissions (which contribute to acid rain) and the vast majority of soot (particulate matter) in our air."

Scientists have also linked burning fossil fuels to ocean acidification. Available evidence indicates that the basic chemistry of our oceans is altered when fossil fuels are burned, because a significant portion of man-made carbon emissions is absorbed by the seas. In fact, the world's oceans have experienced a 30 percent increase in acidity since the start of the Industrial Revolution (Denchak, 2018). This acidification significantly disrupts ocean life and could, as Butler (2016) observes, endanger entire food chains.

Despite receiving relatively little attention, insufficient educational opportunities in developing countries represent one of the most serious threats to environmental security. To begin with, illiteracy has been linked to poorer health outcomes. According to King (2010), persons who are illiterate or semi-literate are less likely to be aware of effective health promotion activities, particularly regarding the role of diet and physical activity in maintaining overall wellbeing. Furthermore, patients who are unable to read or write are less likely to adhere to treatment regimens, largely because they cannot comprehend medication instructions (King, 2010). The end result is lower life expectancy.

Illiteracy has also been associated with reduced financial stability. In modern societies, people with less education have a lower probability of securing permanent or gainful employment, which greatly diminishes their ability to provide for themselves and their families. Limited educational opportunities in developing countries are therefore among the greatest drivers of poverty. Moreover, poverty has been shown to trigger crime. As Dong, Egger, and Guo (2020) point out, crime rates tend to increase alongside poverty and financial destitution. Their research found "that it is the poverty and low income level, rather than income inequality, that is positively related to homicide rates" (Dong, Egger, & Guo, 2020, p. 107).

Lack of educational opportunities in developing countries can also be associated with a poor environmental sustainability record. Environmental sustainability involves ensuring that global ecosystems and natural resources are protected. According to Morin, Orsini, and Jinnah (2020), illiteracy is a stumbling block on many fronts, particularly in efforts to make people aware of why and how natural resources must be protected. For instance, without access to information on how deforestation impacts the broader environment, people are more likely to engage in wanton destruction of vegetation to clear land for farming or development. As Morin, Orsini, and Jinnah (2020) also observe, some school programs incorporate environmental sustainability courses into their curricula, meaning that lack of access to education denies entire populations the knowledge needed for environmental protection.

Conclusion

In the final analysis, it must be recognized that this is the only planet we have. If we show no concern for the global environment and remain negligent, we risk causing irreversible damage to life as we know it. For this reason, formulating and implementing effective measures to deal with the threats identified above is of the utmost importance. However, for such efforts to bear fruit, stakeholders must collaborate in meaningful ways. Without collaboration, these efforts are likely to be disjointed and ultimately unproductive. Collaboration can be achieved through the sharing of resources, the exchange of information, and coordinated policy action.
