Cultural Competence and Cultural Humility in Nursing

~3 min read 4 sections Health · Nursing
Abstract

This paper examines two related but distinct concepts in professional nursing: cultural competence and cultural humility. Drawing on Rose Kearney-Nunnery's framework, the paper defines cultural competence as the informed practice of recognizing and accommodating diverse cultures in healthcare settings, and cultural humility as the personal disposition required to engage without superiority or bias. Using Japan as an illustrative example, the paper demonstrates why even relatively homogenous societies must attend to cultural diversity in clinical environments. It concludes by emphasizing that a balanced, respectful approach to cultural difference strengthens collaboration, patient care, and professional conduct in nursing.

What makes this paper effective

  • Clearly distinguishes two related but conceptually separate terms — cultural competence and cultural humility — without conflating them, which is a common student error in healthcare ethics writing.
  • Uses a concrete, real-world geographic example (Japan) to ground abstract concepts, making the argument more accessible and specific.
  • Maintains a measured, balanced tone when addressing sensitive topics such as nationalism and cultural pride, avoiding both dismissiveness and overcorrection.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates definitional contrast — a technique where two closely related concepts are introduced together and then carefully separated by function and implication. By first establishing what the two terms share (concern for cultural difference in the workplace) and then isolating what distinguishes them (competence as practice versus humility as disposition), the paper builds analytical clarity from a single source citation.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with a brief framing introduction situating culture in professional life and nursing specifically. The central section develops both key concepts in sequence: cultural competence first, then cultural humility, with the Japan example threading through both. The conclusion synthesizes the argument by advocating for balance rather than either extreme. The structure is tight and appropriate for a focused concept-definition essay at the undergraduate level.

Introduction

Culture is an issue that pervades all aspects of life — and this remains true even in relatively homogenous societies like Japan. One domain where culture is especially consequential is the workplace. Rose Kearney-Nunnery openly explores this from the perspective of nursing. Two of the important concepts she addresses are cultural competence and cultural humility. Though they share a common subject, they differ meaningfully in definition and function. While it is possible to become overly fixated on cultural difference, ignoring such differences entirely is equally unwise.

Cultural Competence in Nursing Practice

The first concept is cultural competence. Kearney-Nunnery summarizes it as the informed and competent practice of recognizing and accommodating differing cultures in the workplace — a practice that fosters diversity, goodwill, and collaboration. Japan offers a useful illustration. That country is relatively homogenous in terms of ethnicity and race, yet many people from around the world travel to or work there. Social and professional frameworks must respond to this reality appropriately. People who travel to or work in Japan will inevitably become sick or injured, bringing them into contact with Japanese nurses and other healthcare professionals. Beyond that, at least some clinicians and healthcare workers in Japan may not be Japanese by birth or heritage. These differing cultures must therefore be able to interact and work together in a cohesive, effective way.

Understanding how best to achieve this, and to establish such practice as a professional norm and value within nursing, is the essence of cultural competence (Kearney-Nunnery, 2015).

Cultural humility is related to cultural competence and is, in fact, a necessary component of it. However, it warrants separate discussion because it is a distinct concept.…

Conclusion

The importance of maintaining the proper balance — between being too culturally attuned and not being culturally attuned enough — cannot be stressed enough. What makes people different should not be a source of contention or acrimony. Diversity in background and perspective ought to be celebrated, as it can lead to richer insights and more well-rounded professional practice. Diversity pursued for its own sake is not the ideal, but dismissing or excluding people because of differing backgrounds and life experiences is not something any professional should accept or embrace.
