This personal statement reflects on the author's journey toward a career in dental hygiene, tracing the influence of a childhood dental hygienist named Susana who sparked an early interest in the profession. The paper details how personal mentorship, academic preparation in math and science, and firsthand exposure to the daily realities of hygiene work shaped the author's professional aspirations. It also addresses a broader motivation: correcting widespread misconceptions about oral hygiene practices and empowering patients through preventive care education. Together, these personal and public health themes form the foundation of the author's commitment to the field.
I still remember everything about her: the way she smiled, the easy way she chatted as she worked, the toothbrushes and good advice she never failed to share before I left. I was privileged to have had an exceptional dental hygienist while I was growing up. Susana was always warm and personable, professional and knowledgeable, and helped me to develop the good dental hygiene habits I have today. She made my trips to the dentist enjoyable, and is one of the chief reasons I decided to pursue this profession, which I associated almost exclusively with her throughout primary and secondary school.
Susana helped to steer my career decision toward dental hygiene in many ways. Early on, when she asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I impetuously told her I wanted her job. As I got older, she would remind me of my career aspirations and ask how they were progressing. Although I always had a natural aptitude for math and science, she was one of the first people to explain how important a mastery of these subjects was to the dental profession, particularly in areas such as anatomy. With her guidance and that of my high school counselor, I was able to identify the right courses to take in preparation for a postsecondary program in dental hygiene.
I am proud to say that I have earned very good grades in those preparatory courses and in my other classes, as my transcript reflects. Furthermore, I have developed realistic expectations about the daily work of a hygienist thanks to time spent with Susana, who was generous enough to walk me through her schedule and discuss both the rewarding and the less pleasant aspects of dental hygiene work. I believe I am prepared to set a strong example for patients about the value of oral health. As a dental hygienist, I see it as my responsibility to be as personable, diligent, and accomplished in my profession as my original mentor in this field was, so that I may inspire others to do the same.
