Students at High Tech High complete interdisciplinary projects that require authentic products — documentary films, engineering prototypes, published research reports — for real audiences. Studies of High Tech High graduates have found strong college-matriculation and persistence rates, and ethnographic accounts of the school, including those analyzed by Larry Rosenstock and colleagues, consistently describe students who understand the purpose of their work in ways that students in conventional schools rarely report. The context of genuine audience and genuine product changes what students believe learning is for.
Project-based learning (PBL) is the most systematically researched classroom application of experiential learning theory, and its trajectory from progressive-education ideal to mainstream reform strategy is itself an instructive case. The Buck Institute for Education (now PBLWorks) has produced widely used frameworks for PBL implementation since the 1990s, defining "Gold Standard PBL" around criteria including a challenging problem or question, sustained inquiry, authenticity, student voice and choice, reflection, critique and revision, and public product. Project-Based Learning as Institutional Reform
The evidence base for PBL has grown substantially since the early 2000s. The most serious challenge to experiential learning's primacy comes not from naïve defenders of lecture but from researchers in cognitive science who argue that direct instruction is more efficient and more equitable than its critics acknowledge. Cognitive load theory, developed by John Sweller in the 1980s and 1990s, holds that working memory is severely limited in capacity, and that poorly designed discovery learning overwhelms that capacity with irrelevant problem-solving demands — what Sweller called "extraneous load" — leaving fewer cognitive resources for the learning that actually matters. From this perspective, the novice learner who is thrown into an authentic, complex project before acquiring foundational knowledge is not being empowered; she is being set up for frustration and failure.

The debate between experiential learning and direct instruction is sometimes cast as a choice between engagement and rigor, between student-centered exploration and teacher-led efficiency. That framing is false. What the evidence from Kolb's theoretical framework, Lave and Wenger's ethnographic studies, the McMaster medical school experiment, and High Tech High's documented practice actually shows is that the productive question is not whether students should learn from experience but how experience should be structured to produce the cognitive reorganization that makes knowledge transferable and durable. Reflection is the mechanism; authenticity of context is the condition; scaffolded participation is the method.
The cognitive load theorists are right that poorly designed experiential learning can overwhelm novice learners and produce frustration rather than insight. But their critique applies to bad experiential design, not to the theory itself. Sweller's findings argue for careful scaffolding, not for the elimination of authentic practice. Kirschner and colleagues' evidence against minimal guidance is evidence for intelligent guidance — guidance that is embedded in practice rather than delivered in advance of it.
What makes experiential learning more than a pedagogical preference is its account of what knowledge fundamentally is. If Brown, Collins, and Duguid are right that knowledge is constituted by its context of use, and if Lave and Wenger are right that learning is participation rather than reception, then the traditional lecture classroom is not simply less efficient than experiential alternatives — it is built on a mistaken model of how minds and knowledge relate.
