Many different factors are involved in predicting how a child might develop, what his or her proclivities will be, and whether that child will be predisposed to violence. Similarly, a child growing up in a dangerous, crime-ridden neighborhood is more likely to follow harmful role models.
Over the years, however, several tests grounded in disciplines such as psychology, psychiatry, biology, economics, sociology, and political economy have emerged to offer credible projective testing for children. This paper explores several of those methods, distinguishing between them and discussing their relative strengths and weaknesses.
Historical Background and Lawrence Frank's Framework
Lawrence Frank set the stage for projective testing in 1939: "When people try to understand vague or ambiguous unstructured stimuli, the interpretation they produce reflects their needs, feelings, experience, prior conditioning, thought processes" (Frank, 1939). The main challenge is determining which particular needs, feelings, prior conditioning, and thought processes are relevant in projective testing. Experts from various disciplines attempted to answer that question primarily during the 1940s through the 1960s—the psychoanalytic era.
The Rorschach Inkblot Test
The most famous of these tests is the Rorschach test. By far the most widely used of the projective tests, it appeared in 91% of clinical trials surveyed in 1971. The Rorschach test uses inkblots to measure several indicators of a child's psychological proclivities.
In 1857, Kerner revealed that people can make idiosyncratic or revealing interpretations of ambiguous images, and that these interpretations may be used to judge and measure personality. It was not until 1911, however, that Herman Rorschach suggested that inkblots specifically could be used to elicit such interpretations. At first the test was ill-received, but its legacy has endured to the present day.
The stimuli are generated by dropping ink onto a card and folding it. The cards selected are not random: originally, 10 were hand-selected by Rorschach from the thousands he had created. The test itself is administered with as little information and instruction as possible. The tester typically asks only, "What might this be?" and gives no clue or hint as to what the proper response might be. If anxious test-takers ask questions, testers may give vague answers. To minimize the influence of the tester's facial expressions, testers may sit beside rather than across from the test-taker. Both the orientation of the card and the subject's response are recorded for later interpretation. The cards are shown twice—first for identification and a second time for elaboration.
After analyzing responses according to a number of determinative factors, the testers score the test. There is no hard and fast quantitative scoring method for the Rorschach; rather, scoring is almost entirely qualitative. The traits the test is designed to measure include:

The strengths of the Rorschach test are its simplicity of administration and its wide recognition as a valuable projective tool. The primary weakness is that its scoring is almost entirely qualitative rather than quantitative. An additional weakness is that social conditions have changed considerably since the test's inception, rendering some of its measurement categories less relevant today.
The House-Tree-Person (H-T-P) Test
The House-Tree-Person test was developed by John Buck. As described in the literature:
"The House-Tree-Person (H-T-P) projective technique developed by John Buck was originally an outgrowth of the Goodenough scale utilized to assess intellectual functioning. Buck felt artistic creativity represented a stream of personality characteristics that flowed onto graphic art. He believed that through drawings, subjects objectified unconscious difficulties by sketching the inner image of primary process. Since it was assumed that the content and quality of the H-T-P was not attributable to the stimulus itself, he believed it had to be rooted in the individual's basic personality. Since the H-T-P was an offshoot of an intelligence test, Buck developed a quantitative scoring system to appraise gross classification levels of intelligence, along with a qualitative interpretive analysis to appraise global personality characteristics." The House-Tree-Person test consists of 60 questions ranging from the direct and concrete to the indirect and abstract. Once the interrogation form has been completed and the questions asked, the tester records results in a score folder. From those numerical results, the tester derives an intelligence quotient, ranging across categories from imbecile to moron to borderline to dull average to above average to superior. These scores are also used for personality projective testing; indeed, today the House-Tree-Person test is used more for personality projective assessment than for IQ testing.
The primary advantage of the House-Tree-Person test is that it is more quantitative than the Rorschach test. However, its disadvantage is that it is less interpretively rich: subjects have far more response options in the Rorschach, which generally allows more to be interpreted from Rorschach data.
Conclusion: Balancing Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches
Essentially, all of the projective tests discussed here are flawed in some ways and successful in others. Generally, tests that measure well on qualitative scales produce poor results on quantitative scales, and vice versa. Similarly, tests that give children more freedom to express their thoughts tend to yield results that are harder to interpret and less reliably placed on known interpretive scales.
Projective testing therefore involves many inherent tradeoffs. Perhaps the most successful approach to identifying concerning proclivities during a child's formative years is to combine several of these tests into a comprehensive testing schema. Viewing the child's psychological profile from multiple angles—through qualitative and quantitative lenses alike—provides the most complete and reliable picture of his or her developmental trajectory.
