For instance, as SpaceX points out, "it is the only private company capable of returning a spacecraft from low-Earth orbit, and in 2012 [its] Dragon spacecraft became the first commercial spacecraft to deliver cargo to and from the International Space Station" (SpaceX, 2021). The company's current customer base includes the National Reconnaissance Office, NASA, and the U.S. Department of Defense, among others. These are considerable accomplishments for a privately owned enterprise.

SpaceX employs close to 5,000 people. As Sheetz (2021) points out, the company has managed to raise $1.9 billion in funding since its establishment. As of 2021, SpaceX carried a valuation of $74 billion (Sheetz, 2021). Given the company's revenues at that time, this is a notably high valuation — one that has been associated with expectations of strong future revenue growth (Trefis, 2021).

As of 2020, SpaceX reported total revenues of $1.2 billion (Trefis, 2021). To a large extent, the company currently relies on a single primary source of revenue: the space launch service (Trefis, 2021). In addition to launching satellites into low Earth orbit, this service also enables cargo transportation to and from the International Space Station. Because SpaceX is a privately funded enterprise and is not publicly traded, its stock price is not included in this discussion. It should be noted, however, that as Sheetz (2021) observes, SpaceX has recently "raised new funds at $419.99 a share." The company is headquartered in Hawthorne, California.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

Without a robust ERP system, any organization would find it difficult to achieve meaningful interdepartmental collaboration. As Baltzan (2019) observes, ERP systems facilitate collaboration between departments — effectively enabling personnel within an organization to communicate seamlessly and access crucial data to support decision-making. SpaceX's President and COO, Gwynne Shotwell, has identified internal communication as one of the most critical factors in the company's continued success (Stillman, 2014). In a clear indication of the company's deliberate effort to foster a harmonious working relationship among its units and support ERP implementation, Shotwell has emphasized that the company has intentionally adopted a flat organizational structure (Stillman, 2014).

Previous research has indicated that ERP outcomes are influenced by organizational structure. In the words of Zareravasan, Nabavi, and Mansouri (2015), "the integration and standardization imposed by most ERP systems may not be suitable for all types of organizational structures and it seems that some characteristics in organizational structures affect the likelihood of implementation success or failure" (p. 75). SpaceX's flat structure is, in this context, well aligned with the integration demands of a modern ERP system.
