Task-Oriented Leadership and Team Strategies Explained

~4 min read 4 sections Theories · Leadership Theory
Abstract

This paper examines task-oriented leadership as a management style that emphasizes structure, planning, and scheduled performance standards. Using a project management scenario, the paper justifies the adoption of task-oriented leadership for overseeing the Techfite project team and identifies two key strategies—communication and collaboration—that promote team effectiveness. The paper also analyzes an intragroup conflict of interest among team members with differing project priorities, proposing resolution approaches that include inclusive meetings and team-building opportunities. References draw on foundational texts in group dynamics, conflict resolution, and management theory.

What makes this paper effective

  • Clearly defines each concept before applying it to a specific project scenario, grounding abstract theory in practical context.
  • Provides explicit justification for each leadership style and strategy chosen, rather than simply describing them — a habit that strengthens argumentative writing.
  • Identifies the specific type of conflict (intragroup, conflict of interest) before proposing resolution steps, showing structured analytical thinking.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates applied definition — a technique where a concept is first defined using a cited source, then immediately connected to a real scenario to explain why it is relevant. This is a core undergraduate skill that shows the writer can bridge theory and practice rather than merely summarizing course content.

Structure breakdown

The paper is organized into three thematic sections: leadership style selection and justification, team strategy selection and justification, and conflict type identification and resolution. Each section follows the same pattern — define, justify, apply — making the argument easy to follow. The conclusion of the conflict section doubles as the paper's closing, tying individual resolution tactics back to broader team-building goals.

Task-Oriented Leadership

Task-oriented leadership can be defined as a behavioral approach in which the leader places emphasis on the tasks that need to be completed in order to meet particular objectives or to attain a particular performance standard (Forsyth, 2009). The primary justification for using this style of leadership is that it focuses on structure, plans, and schedules. Task-oriented leadership encompasses aspects such as prioritizing objectives, forming detailed plans and schedules, and reviewing tasks consistently to ensure the project remains on track. It also involves setting and adhering to firm schedules for all elements of the project and assessing those elements alongside project personnel.

In this context, this style of leadership makes it possible to consider all elements of a project — such as safety, innovation design, whether budget constraints remain in place, and whether all other aspects of the project are being followed (Spahr, 2015).

Team Effectiveness Strategies

One of the strategies that will help the Techfite project team work effectively is communication. For a team to be effective in its understanding, both listening and response from all members are necessary. This strategy will be effective because it enables all members — and the project manager — to perceive positive aspects in every interaction, to find common ground with other team members, and to act with due consideration when making inquiries (Windermere, 2016). Through proper communication, all members of the team will be able to understand what tasks are required of them and the timelines set. In addition, communication as a strategy makes it possible to hear new ideas and suggestions that can make the project more successful (Windermere, 2016).

A second strategy that will help the Techfite project team work effectively is collaboration. As noted by Windermere (2016), most teams do not fully understand how to collaborate properly. This is because they rely on approaches of conformity and superficial support that are not genuinely effective. True collaboration is demanding and time-consuming; as a result, most team members tend to work independently in a way that may appear effortless, but the output often lacks quality. The primary justification for collaboration is that it encourages team members to suppress personal objectives for the good of the team and the success of the project as a whole. This means all members become more open to new ideas (Windermere, 2016).
