A system of education that can keep up with breakthroughs and innovations to make maximum use of technical inventions is therefore required, and recent technical developments should be appropriately implemented to make such schooling practicable. This paper discusses the technology used in the classroom with a special focus on learning Arabic as a foreign language.
Technology can function through two main avenues: providing resources for teaching or providing enhanced learning experiences (Larsen-Freeman & Anderson, 2018). As a key resource for Arabic language learners, technology supplies highly structured and innovative learning materials. It also provides an immediate platform for interacting with the second language (L2) outside the classroom. Additionally, it gives teachers a mode for accessing information that enhances their effectiveness and professional growth. For example, chalk and the blackboard have traditionally been the primary classroom tools; however, advancements in technology have introduced additional tools such as online dictionaries, grammar and spelling checkers, and audio-visual platforms. These tools serve to enrich the learning experience through learner autonomy, increased access to L2, and audio-visual entertainment.
Integrating Technology in the Arabic Language Learning Classroom
Students' motivation is boosted when they use the internet. The use of film in teaching helps pupils comprehend and expand their knowledge with enthusiasm. Students can learn more efficiently by using technology in their learning activities, such as computers and the internet. When students use technology to learn, it helps them develop higher-order thinking skills. Drawing learners' attention to the Arabic language requires a true blend of multimedia and teaching methods (Arifah, 2014).
There are two broad approaches to implementing technology in a language classroom. First, the cognitive approach allows students to optimize their language exposure while developing their own knowledge in a meaningful context. Technologies supporting this approach include text-reconstruction software and multimedia simulation software (Altun & Khurshid Ahmad, 2021). Learners can enter computerized micro-worlds in a suitable audio-visual environment using multimedia simulation software, focusing simultaneously on language and culture. The best of these applications give pupils a great deal of control and interaction, enabling them to better shape their language input. Second, the social approach emphasizes the social dimension of language learning, in which linguistic learning is viewed as a process of socialization. Students must be able to practice real-life skills through authentic social interactions. This can be accomplished through collaboration with peers on authentic tasks and projects (Warschauer & Meskill, 2000).
Pronunciation is a significant aspect of language learning, yet it is difficult to deliver constructive criticism effectively. In conventional teaching circumstances, a teacher—who may or may not be skilled at analyzing a student's production—typically provides comments and modeling. Students are usually asked to repeat a pronunciation or are given abstract explanations of how a sound should be produced. By incorporating speech recognition technology, students can receive feedback more efficiently and effectively (Zhao, 2003). In Arabic as a second language classrooms, technology can provide a powerful and appealing method of linguistic instruction. It inspires pupils and makes it easier to practice speaking, reading, listening, and writing (Ilter, 2009). However, technology alone is insufficient to teach Arabic. It requires a teacher with clearly defined objectives who is familiar with the curriculum, who applies sound educational practices, and who creates learning opportunities for students to expand and reinforce prior knowledge.
Research on Wiki technology indicates that it helps students enhance their writing skills. Students were asked to join a Wiki page where they could submit passages and then read and respond to their classmates' work. Learners reported that employing this type of technology improved the speed with which they received feedback. Another finding indicated that reading their classmates' work helped pupils learn vocabulary, spelling, and sentence construction (Lin & Yang, 2011).
Technology in Arabic Language Classrooms
According to a study conducted by Al Musawi et al. (2016), Arabic educators frequently use presentation software (PowerPoint), audio recorders, and online learning tools in their classrooms. By contrast, e-learning platforms and written digital materials have not been widely adopted.
PowerPoint is the earliest, most well-known, and most fully developed digital resource among Arabic language educators. Nearly all Arabic educators employ this ICT strategy across their responsibilities. Educators use PowerPoint for many purposes, including making lesson plans, providing instructional materials, presenting tasks and activities, and assessing students' abilities (Murtadho, 2021). Presentation software is the most prevalent tool, offering advantages in terms of duplication, development, and dissemination. Students can receive their own copy of an interactive resource to use for self-study, and PowerPoint is compatible with platforms such as Google Classroom, allowing for both offline and online learning. PowerPoint presentations have long been promoted and are publicly available on many Arabic language education forums (Murtadho, 2021), allowing educators to access and share materials easily and reliably.
Information and communication technology (ICT) represents a comparatively new dimension in language acquisition. Students can record their own voices while practicing speaking skills, and teachers can record audio as instructional material. Recorded audio can also be utilized for evaluation and feedback, allowing students to work independently to develop their abilities (Murtadho, 2021). Numerous audio recorders have been integrated with computer software and smartphone applications in the form of automatic speech recognition (ASR). This technology refers to a platform's ability to recognize, understand, and transcribe words and phrases. Specialists have made several attempts to improve ASR for Arabic (Alsharhan & Ramsay, 2020). While there have been no major challenges related to phonology or syntax during ASR development, the large dialect variety and morphological complexity of Arabic have posed difficulties until recently (Abdou & Moussa, 2019). During the COVID-19 outbreak, for example, Arabic educators attempted to use WhatsApp to administer speaking assessments to students remotely.
Online language learning platforms are significant digital resources as sources of linguistic information. They serve as instructional platforms for presenting authentic materials, providing opportunities for students to practice their linguistic skills, and creating tasks for Arabic lessons. However, educators are sometimes critical of these digital resources, noting that websites frequently contain too much content, which can make learning difficult for pupils.
Newer technologies, such as Web 2.0 tools (e.g., Edmodo and Wiki) and learning management systems, are rarely employed in Arabic classrooms. Web 2.0 is becoming more extensively utilized as an interactive resource as learners shift away from traditional learning and toward online environments. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many institutions built Web 2.0-connected e-learning sites as venues for communicating, exchanging resources, and reporting assignments and student work (Osman, 2020). One example is SIPEJAR (Sistem Pengelolaan Pembelajaran, or Learning Management System). Additionally, some institutions offer integrated library systems that provide students and academic staff with access to digital materials such as journals, dissertations, conference papers, scholarly reports, and monographs.
However, not all of these platforms have been effectively utilized in Arabic language study. Some faculties have recently tested using electronic content as a linguistic corpus, including Arabic-language corpora (Murtadho, 2021). The corpus is a collection of texts that students can utilize to improve their language skills. Such corpora can be used in Arabic classes by leveraging properties such as collocation and concordance. Results of pilot research by Bardovi-Harlig et al. (2017) suggest that corpus-based tools can help students learn the form of terms, look up definitions, and understand context. Corpus-based language learning focuses particularly on developing writing skills and expanding vocabulary.
Conclusion
Digital tools are rapidly being adopted by Arabic language educators, although there is still much room for improvement. Most educators use PowerPoint presentation materials as their primary digital tool, while a few others direct their pupils to online learning sites and resources such as audio recorders. However, educators are far more experienced in leveraging digital resources to deliver content and learning experiences in the classroom than in using them for lesson preparation or in-class assessment. The largest gap that must be addressed is the design and deployment of digital resources specifically intended for class preparation and assessment activities.
Arabic is the national language of the Arab world, and the potential benefits of technology tools for Arabic language learning are substantial: they improve comprehension, stimulate learning motivation, provide timely feedback, and enhance learning quality through collaborative learning. To realize these benefits, instructors need both technical and pedagogical competence to design interactive digital resources consistently. Regardless of how skilled or experienced Arabic educators are with digital resources, they must have access to a comprehensive digital resource library—complete with catalogs and guides—as well as adequate infrastructure to support sustained technology integration.
