If they do not, the entire workforce may be placed at risk. With a sound safety program in place, there will be a reduction of accidents at the workplace.

This paper concentrates on the issue of workplace safety, its application, and the different approaches that both employees and employers can put into practice to ensure the safety of workers and the protection of organizational investments. The paper takes a dual approach: one addressing physical hazards and the other examining the health and welfare of employees.

In every workplace, a worker has the right to an environment that is safe, the right to proper training, and the right to refuse working conditions that are unsafe or that may expose them to undue danger. In general, it is everyone's responsibility to ensure that any work undertaken meets the minimum safety requirements. It is therefore important to note that no work is worth risking one's life and limb. Safety can be achieved through systematic approaches to evaluating risks and seeking solutions for eliminating them. Upon inquiry, most employees were unaware of any official procedure for this, yet they work in an environment where mishandled chemicals can pose serious danger. In the event of an accident involving these chemicals, the employees are not equipped with the knowledge to respond appropriately.

First aid response is a standard approach fully recommended for any organization or workplace setting to prevent the escalation of harm. There must be a fully equipped first aid kit appropriate to the workplace and the likely dangers employees may face. A detailed action plan on how injured employees should be handled is also necessary. This includes emergency contact numbers, an identified medical facility, and a well-equipped first aid kit accessible to everyone or at least to every department. A selected number of employees from each department should be thoroughly trained in first aid, with training tailored to the likely incidents in that organization. The workshop did have sufficient and well-equipped first aid kits that were easily reachable in an emergency — a positive sign of some level of safety awareness within the company. Emergency numbers were also prominently displayed, including the number of the designated hospital.

Employers should ensure that machines, tools, and equipment are in good condition and do not cause injury to workers due to deterioration or disrepair. Good health and safety practice also requires that all workers be capable of using the machines they handle as part of their job; adequate training on machine use is therefore a health and safety precaution. There should be conspicuous signs indicating operational hazards or extra safety requirements for any machine, such as areas where helmets or leather gloves must be worn.

Supervision should always be present when employees are working with machines so that any injury that may occur is dealt with promptly. Equipment should always be maintained in good working condition, with old machinery replaced and equipment in use kept in order and functioning. The floors in workplaces should not be messy, dirty, or slippery, as these conditions can lead to fall-related injuries while operating machines. All new workers should be properly oriented to the workplace with the risks clearly communicated to them. Teamwork should be encouraged, particularly for lifting heavy objects that may be hazardous when handled by one individual alone.

The floor of the workshop was not as tidy as it should be, with pieces of timber and metal scattered throughout. There were instances of plastic wrappings on the floors, which can be very slippery and hazardous. Loose cables were observed hanging from some machines and along the walls, and some employee aprons had loose ends and straps that could easily become entangled in machinery. There is also the need to know the laws that act as guidelines for companies in providing safe workplaces. A safety manager should be employed to ensure that applicable legislation is known and consistently observed (Green, 2012).

The Health and Safety Act clearly gives the issue of safety priority and stipulates the obligations of both the employer and the employee in ensuring the workplace remains a secure and safe environment.
