In the film, split screening is used to demonstrate how the characters of Annie Hall and Avi Singer perceive each other. For instance, when Annie and Avi go to visit Annie's family, he reminisces that his family is nothing like hers; this is shown through split screening with the Hall family on the right half of the screen and the Singer family on the left. Through their conversation, behavior, and dress, it is clear that the Hall family and the Singer family are vastly different. This technique is also used to show how Annie and Avi interact with their respective analysts. On the right side of the screen, Annie is shown to be talking to her analyst about Avi, while on the left is Avi talking about Annie. By using a widescreen shot, the audience is able to take in the entire park as the couple sees it. The camera later focuses on specific people, such as the Truman Capote lookalike contest winner, as they identify him as. Though this type of analysis is mostly limited to the park, it allows the audience to see how the couple perceives the world and the things that they have in common, which are few and far between.
Through editing, speaking directly through the camera, and the shots that are used in the film, which reflect the way a person would see the world, Woody Allen is able to successfully create a film that not only analyzes its characters, as they see themselves and each other, but also allows for analysis of others and their personalities.
