¶ … Architecture School as a Transfer After Completing 3 Years Elsewhere, Student Is Now 30

Personal Statement: Tell us why you are interested in studying in this program at the New York Institute of Technology for your Architecture, B.A.

I am currently working as an architectural drafter. I am involved in setting AutoCAD standards and creating AutoCAD designs at Cannon Design, an architectural firm located in Boston. The field of architecture is familiar to me, vocationally, and I understand its rigor and the pressures of the profession. I have witnessed 'in the field' the demands made upon the firm's architects. I am aware of wide variety of knowledge demanded of architects today in terms of mathematics, spatial awareness, the practical needs of human life, and as well as the need to create a beautiful design.

I would like to put my own knowledge talents into creative practice as an architect. Currently, I am involved with the evolving design of the University of Massachusetts hospital. It has been fascinating to discuss the needs of creating a hospital that balances the structural needs of a healthcare environment, creates a functional place of work, fosters a pleasant environment for patients and staff, and is architecturally feasible. It has been one of the greatest and most joyous challenges of my current architectural career. I have also worked previously in construction management, experience that will act as an additional aid in coping with the practical demands of my chosen profession.

Unfortunately, my school transcripts do not reflect my level of commitment to the field of architecture, despite the fact that I have been working at architectural firms for more than ten years. After September 11th, I was let go from my job due to the financial pressures placed upon the firm where I was working. I was forced to terminate my schooling, because of financial reasons. Also, my father was dying of pancreatic cancer and my focus was on my family, not on my own needs and professional aspirations, and my grades are unfortunately reflective of this fact. But now, New York is currently where most of my friends and loved ones reside, and where the cutting edge of architecture is, in America today. I long to regain my professional bearings and become a part of the program at the New York Institute of Technology.
