Aviation Safety Program Management

The average air traveler rarely sees the essence of recognizing the aviation safety regulations in place. People only and often recognize the factors of safety after a horrific accident occurs. Within the daily working schedules in the private and commercial flights, countless lives of innocent passengers depend on the full implementation of the safety regulations. These safety procedures are in place to protect the lives of the passengers. The drafting and implementation of safety regulations is not only significant to those travelling by air, but to those conducting their business on the ground, as well. For instance, a scenario in which a large plane crashes in a large metropolitan area has disastrous and detrimental effects. Thus, every nation has placed a civil aviation authority to maintain order in the management of the air industry (Transportation department (DOT); federal aviation administration (FAA) (F.R. page 53530) -- meeting, 2011). The Federal aviation Administration in United States is among those associations with stern regulations to govern air travel.

Background information

The federal aviation administration has the mandate of overseeing the procedures that constitute the safety in United States. In its given obligations, this body conducts various measures to ensure that travelling in the aviation means is secure. The body, though the set regulations, oversees the training and certification of pilots and engineers within the aeronautical field. Additionally, they oversee the training of the rest of the plane crew and inspection of the planes before they take flight. In their procedures, they conduct thorough checks to scrutinize the certification of the navigators and pilots (Stolzer, Halford & Goglia, 2008). They also do the pilot ratings and scrutinize the credentials of the aviation mechanics and engineers in the country. This is in their endeavor to ensure that the field gets the best-trained, qualified and conscientious employees to work in the airline industry.

Consequently, these heavy obligations come with their consequences, such as welding the responsibility for non-compliance to the aviation rules. However, despite these checks, the industry faces several challenges that cause fatal happenings in the country. In case of accidents occurring, the fatality index is incomprehensible (FAA exceeds general aviation safety goals, 2008). The industry faces challenges, as the compliance to the safety rules in place is not maximum. Additionally, there are incidences of accidents that, in view of the safety regulations, they should never be a concern to the people. The aviation administration continues to evaluate means and measures of safety to employ to address accident mitigation, synthetic vision and aviation system monitoring and modeling.

Data collection

In covering this case, I employed the following structures to gather information for the study. With questionnaires to the federal aviation administration, and sample airlines in the country, I managed to draw data for this study. Additionally, the study also included the use of interviews to various parties, including passengers to gather their views on the subject of their safety. In these procedures, the intention was to evaluate the arising factors in the industry, to develop a comprehensive program for managing air safety. Moreover, the case data also came from the review of available literature on the subject of safety regulations and related subjects to the topic. In the course of this study, the gathering of information led to the consequent findings and synthesis of the data to arrive at a conclusive finding. The interviews, questionnaires, observations and review of literature were the channels for getting the information in the findings.


The use of air travel proves to be the preferred future model of transport. However, it is clear that there is a concern with the practices within the industry. Safety and regulation seem to come last while the commercial interests are overriding all other matters of concern. From the evaluation of the safety information from the passengers of air travel, a significant number of people shows that they do not care much as to their safety, but rather to how fast they get to their destination. The passengers indicate that they have little knowledge of the safety concerns at hand. The authority concerned with the safety issues, which is the federal aviation administration, indicates that it has a concern over the safety of the people. Similarly, the employees in the industry also show that they have concerns to their safety within the working environment.

The arising concerns that this case study noticed from this data is the safety concerns regarding the occurrence of accidents that include accident mitigation. In this aspect, the correspondents indicated fear that they have towards the safety measures of curbing the occurrence of accidents for all three groups, which are employees, passengers and authority of the airline. The employees, especially the pilots, complained of the scare that comes with vision in the air. The literature review indicates that the single leading factor causing air accidents is reduced vision in the atmosphere. Therefore, this factor stands out as a challenge to the safety regulations within the air industry. On the part of the authorities, their primary safety concern is the aviation modeling and monitoring systems in place. These are the key issues of safety that the industry in the county is facing.


The findings indicate these three issues that present challenge to the industry of aviation. Air transport is a significant and preferred mode of transport in the country. The findings named accidents occurrence as the leading worry of the parties in the industry. The problem arises from three different perspectives. These perspectives are from the human causes, mechanical and engineering perspectives. From the human perspective, accidents occur due to errors by human. For instance, when a pilot is not competent, they lack the technical skills to handle the plane. This way, the pilot causes accident to occur, leading magnanimous losses. Additionally, human errors, such as poor estimation of time and landing space, the pilot can cause an accident (Stolzer, Halford & Goglia, 2008). When the plane is in preparation for flight, the loading team may overload the aircraft. This causes the plane to crash due to the overweight. Additionally, on the mechanical and engineering perspectives, accident occurs due to mechanical failures within the airplane. For instance, an engine may fail to work, or other mechanical challenges may arise. This causes the airplane to crash; hence, accident occurs.

Secondly, the pilots and flight attendants sighted poor vision as a concern in the process of travelling by air. The limited visibility occurs when there are dark clouds in the atmosphere where the planes fly. The nature of this safety concern is because of natural occurrences. Therefore, it is a technically involving factor of safety concern in the air industry (FAA exceeds general aviation safety goals, 2008). The third concern of safety in the aviation industry in the country as the findings indicate is the systems of modeling and monitoring the aircraft. The modeling of the plane depends on the make and design of the plane. Therefore, the concern of safety clearly leads to the manufacturers of the aircrafts. Therefore, the safety regulation program should focus on these three areas to major in ensuring that the industry is secure, and process of air travel is safe for both the employees and the passengers.


In the case of the study, the three issues arising concerning safety are clear. To address the issues, the aviation safety program should factor in the following suggestions. In the first issue, the prevention of accidents is vital. Currently, the federal aviation administration has safety measures such as thorough inspection of the certification of pilots, mechanics and engineers in the aeronautical filed. Moreover, there are systems to monitor errors by humans that cause accidents.
