Recapitulation of Murder Statistics for the State of Florida: Male -- 2001 through 2011

Crime in Florida: Uniform Crime Reports (2013)

The murder rate in the State of Florida for the period 2001 through 2011 equals 626 murders per year. As can be seen from the statistics in Table 1 and depicted graphically in Figure 2 above, there was a spike in the murder rate beginning in 2005 that peaked in 2008 which has since declined to lower than the average murder rate per year (i.e., 590 murders by Floridian males in 2011). Overall, the State of Florida has the 17th highest murder rate in the country (Nationwide murder rates, 2013). Although the numbers of murders by male Floridians has declined somewhat since its peak in 2008, more of the murders committed in 2011 involved firearms compared to years past (Crime in Florida, 2013).

What remains unclear from the raw statistics is just how many of the male perpetrators were gang members. These statistics are maintained by the State of Florida security threat group task force, though, which reports gang-related criminal activities in Florida have increased every single year since 1990 (Jordan, 2009). According to Jordan, "The crimes committed have become more and more violent. For example, the number of gang members convicted of capital murder increased 22.44% from 2006 to 2008" (p. 29).
