Yet it appears to have a profound effect to benefit the process of healing. Gentle circular movements, sweeping motions, and a light touch are employed to lift the soft tissue. By doing this, blood circulation and the lymphatic system are stimulated to promote natural healing. Rhythmical Massage is an exciting treatment because the patient gets considerable relief without the use of drugs or steroids; thus, adverse side-effects are avoided. This is an approach that nurses and massage therapists can learn to do that can really help patients with Crohn's Disease to harmonize the body and rest. Liddy's article states that Rhymical Massage is a medical treatment that requires training and practice. Usually, it is prescribed by a physician who can use it alone or in conjunction with traditional medicine and/or natural remedies. Because it is a specific technique for stimulating healing in the intestines, it must be done correctly so as not to aggravate the symptoms.

I would like to learn to do Rhythmical Massage so I could offer something that genuinely relieves the patient's suffering while at the same time it does no harm. A patient I know that could benefit is Wayne, a 42-year-old man who was operated on a year ago. At that time he received a colostomy, which after six months was reversed. His condition has improved...

His reaction to steroids has been a weight gain of nearly one hundred pounds. When I talked to him about the possibility of treatment with Rhythmical Massage, he was very receptive to the idea. Liddy states, "The stroking, sweeping motions go with the gut, not just soothing but actively encouraging, accelerating the healing process." When I explained this to him, he said it sounded good. He would like to avoid further surgery and to taper off the hormonal treatment his doctor has placed him on. With rhythmical massage to support his recovery, this seems entirely possible. The doctor is more skeptical, but willing to give it a try in lieu of the fact that it will not harm the patient. If the patient's condition improved significantly, drugs could be gradually reduced (with medical supervision, of course) and additional surgery might prove to be unnecessary. Because of its non-invasive nature and potential to ameliorate pain and suffering, I find Rhythmical Massage to be a very desirable option in the treatment of Crohn's Disease.
