Nursing Theories: Personal Experience, Pros and Cons
Theories in nursing are fundamental frameworks that direct nurses in their practice, help with decision-making, guidance in actions, and interactions with patients. They help in understanding the principles behind nursing care. They can be used to predict patient outcomes, and they can also explain patient behaviors and the appropriate nursing interventions (Mudd et al., 2020).
Application of Nursing Theory in Practice
A practical example of using a nursing theory to direct care can be drawn from Virginia Hendersons Need Theory. This theory emphasizes the importance of patient independence so that they may recover more quickly (Larsen et al., 2022). In my practice, I applied Hendersons theory to the care of a post-operative patient who required assistance with basic needs due to limited mobility. We focused on the 14 basic needs outlined by Henderson, such as breathing,...
I developed a care plan that involved teaching the patient to perform these tasks independently with the use of assistive devices.Using Theories from Other Fields: Maslows Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is also applicable in nursing. This theory proposes that basic needs must be met before an individual can focus on higher-level needs. I used Maslows hierarchy to prioritize care for a...
…to the needs and preferences of all patients. This would be an oversight that could also undermine patient care. Conclusion
Overall, it is clear that the use of theories in nursing is invaluable for providing high-quality, evidence-based care, and it offers principles that nurses can apply in every day practice. But although nursing theories are specifically designed to guide nursing practice, there are theories from other fields like psychology that can also be applied. Also, there may be challenges to applying all theories, but there are benefits of using many other theoretical frameworks. These benefits can usually outweigh the disadvantages, and can be useful in creating a comprehensive…

Theory Critique of Jean Watson Introduction and Historical Context Jean Watson developed the theory of transpersonal caring or the theory of human caring in the year 1979. The theory points at the humanistic characteristics of nursing in relation to the scientific knowledge in the world. Watson developed this theory with the aim of communicating meaning, and making nursing a unique health profession. We consider caring as the core responsibility to nursing; therefore,
I would agree with this statement, since theory and practice, when applied to each other appropriately, inform each other and cannot in fact be separated into two distinct entities. It is vitally important to use theory for informing practice, while practice would further inform theory, making the statement that a good theory is, in fact, practically true. 5. Theory Development Nature and Use of Theory in Academic Research Corley and Gioia (2001) call theory the, "currency of our scholarly realm" (p. 12). The authors further explain that theoretical contribution is a requirement for a manuscript to be considered for publication. It appears that all scholarly writing hinges on the theoretical worthiness of the material. Corley and Gioia defined theory as a statement of concepts and their interrelationships that together, demonstrate
Theory vs. Creativity in Design Leaders have a task of moving the organization forward in a fashion that is supported by all stakeholders. After allocating resources to bolster organizational success, leaders must primarily assess and accept the risks related innovation. Innovation includes accepting new management theories to replace the outdated philosophies widely incorporated into an organization's procedures and policies over time (American Evaluation Association, 2004). This study aims to identify, discuss,
Feminist theory can get very political and insistent, but that can and should be tempered by a realistic understanding of what can be accomplished when people all agree to work together in order to see a positive change in the way people are treated. When people become focused on the race or gender of a person, or they become too focused on the words used without clarifying the intent of
