There is much to be learned from studying this, and the roots of it really need to involve a multidisciplinary approach. Without this approach, the goal of multicultural education is never actually realized. Having a framework that can be used to create concepts in this area helps to show that there are many different genres that the research into this area can be involved in, and they all important.
Bennett's main goal in her article is to show that there are many different ways to prepare these types of programs and figure out how best to teach students. Sometimes just rearranging a program that is already in existence is the best idea. Other times, it is necessary to design completely new programs that will do the job as intended. Having an article such as this one helps teachers and educators to do the very best that they can to help all of their multicultural students.
Another important point in Bennett's article is that those that come up with multicultural theories really need to consultant original research when they look at ways to study this issue. It is in this way that more possibilities are created that will allow teachers and other educators to practice much of what they are taught when it comes to multicultural education. In the past, many of those that dealt with multicultural theory had been consulting other theorists and other secondary sources.
This is not really giving the multicultural issue the study that it actually needs. The theorists are simply getting information from one another instead of actively trying to discover more about the issue on their own. The genres that are discussed in this paper are actually only proposed by the author. Bennett has been working in this field for more than 30 years, however, so what she has to say is likely very credible.
Because of the amount of research and practice that she has had, the genres that are discussed in this paper all are worthy of consideration and thought. Examples are also included. These help to clarify some of what Bennett is talking about and they also show how much of what she discusses can actually be applied to real world situations when dealing with multicultural education. One of the main ideas of this article was that multicultural education must also be multidisciplinary. I believe that this is very accurate.
Education is extremely important, and multicultural education is often difficult. However, that does not mean that this type of education can be applied only to one discipline. This does not allow students to experience a complete range of learning, and therefore cheats them out of much of what they need to learn to better themselves as they grow. A multidisciplinary approach is clearly the only way of actually teach multicultural education not only to students but to other teachers who are planning on teaching students.
