Person Statement
Our attitude toward life determines life's attitude towards us." - Earl Nightingale.
Ambition, drive and unwavering commitment; these are all included in my attitude towards life. In return, I expect life to deliver my highest goals and ambitions: first to obtain my B.A. In Government, second to enter law school, and third to become an attorney and excel at my job. So how does one come by such an attitude? Probably the answer that first comes to mind does not relate in any way to home schooling. Yet home schooling is exactly what I needed to bring me to the levels of academic excellence I have reached so far.
Several negative connotations have developed around home schooling, but I would like to contend that these are all false, and that I am living proof of the potential and benefits of home schooling. During my home schooling career throughout my junior high to graduation years, I was obliged to demonstrate a very high level of both self-discipline and commitment. The reason for this is that in home schooling, a student's success depends only upon him- or herself. I was required to study my daily lessons, and do homework on my own. Assuming that I was capable of doing this, the adults in my household provided only minimal guidance. At the same time, my parents did know just when to support and encourage.
I am fortunate in many ways. My parents have not only been emotionally supportive of me and my goals, but also financially. My father particularly helps to support my college career, while also working to support my three brothers and one sister. This is another motivating factor for making the most of my studies. Having completed two college semesters, I want to work not only to reach my academic goals, but also to relieve some of my father's financial pressure. In addition, I also want to provide my siblings with a positive role model to help them develop the same ambition and drive that will propel me towards my ultimate goal. I want them to develop these qualities in order to help them become as successful as I have been so far, and doubtlessly will be in the future. Most importantly, I want to return to my father at least a fraction of what he has given to me in education and encouragement. If it were not for his decision to home school me, I would not have been where I am today, and most likely I would have set less ambitious longer-term goals.
A graduated my home schooling career with honors, earned extra credits, and achieved all the goals I set for myself. I did this entirely by self-directed scholarship, and on the basis of what I received from my parents. This in turn enabled me to enter college at the unusually early age of sixteen years old. At seventeen, I have no completed almost two years of college. This, in my view, gives me an advantage over many other people at my age. Through home schooling I have matured to a level where can pursue my studies with full confidence of success. Having a GPA of 3.93, I have absolutely no doubt that I can reach my next goal, which is a B.A. In Government, after which my aim is to enter law school and become an attorney. Of course I also believe in always aiming for higher, better goals. When I reach my currently highest goal of becoming an attorney therefore, I will strive to be the best in my field.
