NURSING
Nursing: Psycho-Pharmalogical Approaches to Treat Psychopathology
The receptor activity is significant in creating the agonist or antagonist responses in neuroscience understanding; the constitutive receptor actions behave simply as competitive antagonist actions or agonist ones (Berg & Clarke, 2018). The tonic and basal levels of responses reduce the responses of agonist actions mainly on account of endogenous agonists. For instance, the neuro-actions created by drugs could be misunderstood because of a decrease in constitutive receptor activity, also known as inverse agonism (Berg & Clarke, 2018). Hence, the treatments for psychiatric disorders have to be suggested with careful contemplation since the need for proteins, enzymes, and certain dose-effect reactions vary from individual to individual. The tolerance and sensitization levels differ due to agonist drugs and their effect on the homeostatic compensatory mechanism, neurons, and neural circuitry adaption (Nutt, 2007).
There is a difference between G-coupled proteins and ion-gated channels. The G coupled proteins are diverse and can identify many ligands (Molecular Devices, n.a.). The ligands could include photons, proteins, and even small molecules. On the other hand, Ion channels are holes, apertures, or pores present in the cellular membrane that let ions come and go out of the cell.
The human genome has more than 400 genes for compensating the ion channels, which could help target drugs that present themselves as blockbusters (Molecular Devices, n.a.). The drug impacts have to be anticipated beforehand since majorly FDA-approved drugs react G coupled proteins that could create influences on chronic diseases, hormonal imbalances, cancer, and psychiatric illnesses (Molecular Devices, n.a.).
Epigenetic regulation of gene activity has shown significant results in upholding normal phenotypic activity of cells (Stefanska & MacEwan, 2015). Its role in managing the diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s disorder is a regulated mechanism for counteracting illness states. By pharmacological means, the ability to control disease and understand human diseases’ reactivity hold importance in epigenetics. Also, the treatments involve regular use of a healthy diet whose prominence cannot be overstated in stimuli creation of a healthy human body. There is a storing connection between the epigenome and carbon metabolism that could be triggered by nutrients coming from a healthy diet. It is comprehensible that physicians suggest a healthy diet with pharmacological treatments to observe positive health outcomes faster.
This information may impact how nurses prescribe medication to patients since they need to be aware of their body condition, medical history, cultural backgrounds, hormonal imbalances (if any), and genetic diseases (if any) in the family. As mentioned earlier, these factors would create a deferring influence on different individuals. The agonist-to-antagonist spectrum of action of psychopharmacologic agents could be diverse with certain medications.
Nurses need to consult with other professionals so that previous medications or diet plans should not counter-react with the next prescribed medications from the nurse. It could worsen the patient’s psychiatric condition as neural receptors would receive different levels of proteins, photons, or molecules released from the medicine formulas into the blood.
