Summary and Response to Common accommodations and modifications in school by Amanda Morin
What are the major themes of the reading? What were the important applications to learning?
The major theme in the reading concerns the provision of appropriate accommodations and modifications for students that are struggling in school. These adjustments aim to support their learning, behavior, and everyday skills development. The important applications to learning include identifying and making accommodations that involve changing the presentation, response methods, setting, timing, scheduling, and organization support to make the educational content and assessments more accessible without fundamentally altering the core curriculum. In this context, modifications involve adjusting the assignments, assessments, and curriculum standards themselves to match students unique needs and capabilities. These accommodations and modifications can also be individualized to address specific learning disabilities.
What resonated with you as you read? Aha! Moments? Where did the text challenge you?
In truth, all of the strategies resonated with me to some degree, but a special Aha moment for me was the realization that some of these strategies are pie-in-the-sky approaches for already overcrowded classrooms and the fact that some were dumbing down coursework rather than achieving the above-stated goal.
What questions were raised as you read?
Is it fair for all students to provide these types of modifications and accommodations during a period when most students are already struggling in the post-Covid-19 era? Moreover, who will pay for these additional and expensive teaching alternatives?
Learning disabilities in children are sometimes difficult to identify. Children can go years without proper diagnosis. If they are never diagnosed, they can go well into adulthood without knowing anything was wrong, impacting their academic performance and career choices. Therefore it is important to understand what some of these learning disabilities are in order to identify it sooner and assist children once identified, by properly instructing the disabled child to

Another study conducted by Flax, Realpe-Bonilla, Roesler, Choudhury, and Benasich (2010) studied the profiles of children with a family history (FH+) of language-learning impairments (LLI) and a control group of children with no reported family history of LLI (FH-) with the hope of identifying "which language constructs (receptive or expressive) and which ages
Either one of these things can lead to acting out. The students in her LD classroom are often grouped together during specific tasks, so they have others to talk to and work with. This helps them to be less frustrated and keeps them from feeling as though they are the only one who cannot understand a particular task. Sometimes, they can talk out their issues with a particular task
Conclusion For the new teacher, the most important factor in resolving issues concerning students with learning disabilities is to recognize the high incidence of depression and other emotional disturbances that go along with it. Early treatment and intervention can improve the outcome for the child. However, the teacher must first be able to recognize the signs of these disorders and to provide them with resources that will help them resolve these
Distance learning education provides a wide range of resources and learning experiences that are usually much more diverse than the traditional brick and mortar classroom can furnish. This makes this mode of learning more adaptable to a variety of needs by different learner. The next article by Edmond addresses the requirements and standards that need to be met in order to provide adequate access to traditional educational environment for those
It did not tell students promptly if their requests were granted, did not communicate with students and parents about providing reasonable accommodations in a timely, interactive, or sympathetic fashion, and adding the additional requirements for students to prove their LD status seemed destined to add further levels of bureaucracy to the process. Also, because learning disabilities can be a spectrum, someone with a mild learning disability seeking moderate accommodation
