Crime Prevention

Anything that defies the laws and is accountable for punishment forms into a criminal activity with the nature of crime. Crime features harm and violence, to people, to laws, to properties overall showing denial to the existence of these entities. Crime as stated by the judiciary laws must be contrary to the limitations set by the laws and must pose harmful situation to present of future occurring events. Crime or criminal both show varying relationships between each other with respect to the intention of doing the crime and failing to pursue the intention. There are many ways in which the definition of crime is defined and which fall into different categories explaining situational crimes as well as non-situational. Crimes fall into the categories of violent crimes, property crime, white-collar crimes and public order crimes. Crime can be prevented through crime prevention programs however often these programs do not play an effective role in minimizing the criminal activities (Lab, 2010). This paper tends to explain crime and crime prevention techniques in a detailed form. The definition of crime prevention has been extracted solely with the writer's own analysis. The paper also contains a detail on the explanation of the relationship between crime prevention and criminal justice system. At the end, a few examples have been added to demonstrate how crime prevention programs are working hard to create programs and methodologies that are helpful for the society in trying to restore a healthy criminal free environment. Crime prevention is not only a method to suppress and eliminate sources criminal activity but to focus on the factors that are responsible for the formation and development of crime factors. Criminal activities take place based on two factors: habitual and need. A criminal's mindset may be triggering with the needy causes of committing a crime or is a psychologically habitual individual that possess risky behavior attributes leading him to committing crime (Lab, 2010). This does not limit the motivation of crime. Crime can be an outcome of many other motivations that are beyond needs or psychologically challenged aspects.

The basic elements constituting the crime prevention practice consist of the five major components. These components have taken modified forms into various types of crime prevention techniques. The first component is the awareness, which is the awareness of the crime and its nature. Second component is the prevention. Prevention can be of many forms; avoidance or preparing for safety measures. Third component is the risk reduction, which emphasizes on adopting safety measures for any unfortunate situation. It may include home safety measures such as installing safety alarms in the premises. Fourth component is the risk avoidance that is minimizing the chances of contact with any criminal activity believed to take place. Fifth component emphasizes learning self-defense techniques to escape from getting into a troubled situation and afterwards protecting oneself (Worall & J.L, 2008). Crime prevention has a relationship with criminal justice system that works to embody a set of rules and regulations for identifying and penalizing criminal activities committed by people. All the laws designed by the system are based on the intensity of the crime and the extent to which it is forgivable. Criminal justice system exists to prevent crime however; they are independent of each other in the concept of crime prevention. According to Worrall, crime prevention and criminal justice system both have conflicting nature as toe being liberal and conservative not only on crime related issues but also political ones. Criminal justice plays a role in crime prevention with three basic majors including investigation, prosecution and punishment. The constitution of criminal justice system helps in investigation of crime and the criminal. However, it does not guarantee that the crime would be prevented. In some cases, investigation lead to clues on whether the crime is about to take place or have taken place already. This can be a major factor in determining either of the two outcomes and then processing accordingly. Similarly, prosecution is not helpful in preventing crime as the possible settlements provide chances for the criminal to free himself thereby increasing risks of further criminal activity. Punishment alone cannot be a playing factor in preventing crime. Preventive measures are always worthy in controlling any criminal activity. Punishments can be regarded as a chance for renewal that may have as much chances of success as of failure.
