AI can help police sort through video footage of crimes, analyze a crime scene, compare crime scenes, and predict future crime locations (Sabnis & Khurana, 2018). Had AI technology been available at the time of Ted Bundy or the Atlanta Child Murders, those cases probably would not have continued for as many years as they did.

Data Analytics and Predictive Policing

As Brown (2017) explains, data analytics is at the heart of what policing is really about when it comes to crime prevention. Data reveals patterns and allows predictions to be made about where to concentrate police forces. The data shows that certain crimes are more likely to occur under certain conditions — at night, in particular neighborhoods, and so on. If police are looking for a suspect or trying to stop a type of crime such as serial killing, they can enter the data they have into an AI program and see what predictions emerge, what trends appear, and what patterns become apparent.

Data analysts already do this type of work, but machine learning and AI tools allow analysts to do it even more efficiently. Humans work slowly, but machines — once programmed — can work very quickly. When time is of the essence, as it always is in a murder case, the more computing power working on a case — such as the Bundy case or the Atlanta Child Murders — the more likely it is that the next murder may be prevented.

AI assists with intelligence work because it processes volumes of information that humans cannot manage on their own. AI technology can be fed data from prior serial killing sprees so that it understands the defining characteristics and features of that type of crime. Based on that intelligence, it can create models that enable police to understand current crimes and how they might develop. Just as meteorologists use predictive modeling to make weather forecasts with good accuracy, investigators can use AI modeling to make forecasts about crime.

AI can help police understand everything from motive to where a killer might try to strike next. This technology can facilitate both active investigations and preventive policing. As Garza and Martinez (2019) explain, "through the use of machine learning, we apply random forest algorithms to create predictive models to analyze more than a thousand serial killers, and be able to predict motivation, potential number of victims, and the sex of serial killers" (p. 1). Had this kind of technology existed in the twentieth century, many killings could likely have been prevented.

AI can be a useful tool in stopping or preventing murders and serial killings because every criminal of that sort leaves a trail, leaves behind a pattern, and leaves clues that AI can analyze to make predictions about who the killer might be, what the motive might be, where the next crime might occur, and how it might happen. Police can use this intelligence to focus resources in ways that maximize policing impact. The more police are looking in the right direction, the less likely a killer is to strike successfully again.
