ALDO Shoes Social Media Strategy: Facebook, Reddit & Pinterest
This paper presents a social media strategy analysis for ALDO Shoes, examining the brand's existing digital presence across six channels and identifying three priority platforms for the coming year: Facebook, Reddit, and Pinterest. Drawing on industry research, competitor campaigns from brands such as Burberry and Levi's, and ALDO's own history of online engagement, the paper evaluates best practices in fashion social media marketing. It argues that while Facebook remains the cornerstone platform, Reddit represents a significant and underutilized opportunity for direct consumer engagement, and Pinterest offers conversion advantages over Instagram for driving website traffic.

What makes this paper effective
- Grounds recommendations in third-party industry research (Boland, 2015; Sharma, 2015), giving the strategic proposals empirical credibility rather than relying solely on opinion.
- Uses competitor case studies — Burberry's visual content strategy and Levi's storytelling and Reddit presence — to build a comparative framework before making brand-specific recommendations.
- Acknowledges counterintuitive findings honestly; the paper notes that Reddit was "by no means believed to be a contender before the research began," which strengthens analytical transparency.
Key academic technique demonstrated
The paper demonstrates applied industry analysis: it surveys the broader competitive landscape first, identifies quantifiable benchmarks (e.g., Reddit driving 71% of Levi's social traffic), and then maps those findings onto a specific brand context. This inductive structure — moving from general best practices to specific platform recommendations — is a hallmark of professional marketing memos and strategy reports.
Structure breakdown
The paper follows a memo format with an executive summary up front, followed by an introduction that contextualizes the challenge, a platform audit of ALDO's existing channels, a review of fashion industry social media practices, and prioritized platform recommendations (Facebook → Reddit → Pinterest). The structure mirrors a real-world marketing brief, making it a useful model for business communications coursework at the undergraduate level.
Executive Summary
It is no secret that ALDO is no stranger to the social media sphere and has been launching various online campaigns for nearly a decade. Since its initial blog offering, ALDO has spread its wings, so to speak, in terms of social media engagement. ALDO's primary website offers links to six different social media channels, including the blog as well as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest (Aldo, N.d.).
As Douglas Bensadoun, VP of Marketing and Creative Director, has been quoted as saying, "fashion retailing is relentless, it's a beast that needs to constantly be fed" (Surridge, 2012). Research has identified many of the current best practices and innovative strategies being used in the industry and has compiled the top three social media focal points suggested for the coming year. These platforms include:
Reddit represents the biggest surprise the research uncovered and was by no means considered a contender before the research began. However, due to the growing popularity of the site globally and the innovative ways it can be used to build brand loyalty through direct engagement, it earned its place among the top three recommendations.
Introduction
Social media has represented a prime opportunity for the fashion industry ever since it developed. Fashion is, in general, a social and cultural phenomenon, and thus the ambitions of social media and being fashionable social creatures are one and the same. That said, the sheer number of social media channels that have emerged can be exhausting for most companies and adds an unprecedented level of complexity to social media strategy development.
E-commerce has long granted customers the luxury and ease of shopping from their homes. With the increasing popularity of smartphones and related mobile apps, consumers can make a host of purchases even while in transit or occupied with other tasks (Cao, 2014). Cross-channel messages, which include social media, are becoming increasingly important to consumers who are creating new expectations. ALDO is actually used as a case study by Salesforce, a customer relationship management (CRM) vendor. By being an innovative and technologically savvy company, ALDO has the capacity to keep pace with social media evolutions.
That being the case, a targeted strategy is still required to make the most effective use of social media. Consumers today will completely gloss over all but the most compelling social media posts, and to be compelling, a message must be on point and make sense to the consumer based on the medium in which it is presented. This paper surveys some of the best practices and most successful campaigns launched in the fashion industry to build a foundation for ALDO's strategy development in the social media sphere.
ALDO Shoes' Social Media Platform Analysis
It is no secret that ALDO is no stranger to the social media sphere and has been launching various online campaigns for nearly a decade. The first major online campaign identified in this research was a preliminary attempt to reach ALDO's clients and target markets directly and create interactions: a blog hosted at Blog.AldoShoes.com (Laird, 2008). The blog offered articles published by style experts, created polls, provided individual advice, and offered product information. One of the site's features was an "Ask Allie" section that offered free expert fashion advice for any fashion situation. ALDO was also able to begin processing data about online visitors and collecting user email addresses for email marketing campaigns. The blog has stood the test of time and continues to be updated regularly.
Since that initial blog offering, ALDO has expanded its social media engagement considerably. ALDO's primary website offers links to six different social media channels, including the blog as well as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest (Aldo, N.d.). In addition to its nearly decade-long history of social media interaction, the company has also passed its forty-year anniversary as a brand. The experience the company has gained has led to insights such as the finding that over two-thirds of ALDO purchases involve online research seeking third-party endorsements, and that consumers also tend to browse ALDO's own online offerings before heading to a store (Surridge, 2012).
E-commerce has granted customers the luxury and ease of shopping from their homes. With the increasing popularity of smartphones and related mobile apps, consumers can make a host of purchases even while in transit or busy with other tasks (Cao, 2014). Cross-channel messages, including social media, are becoming increasingly important to consumers who are establishing new expectations. ALDO is used as a case study by Salesforce, a CRM vendor. Salesforce states:
"The number of communication and sales channels has increased at a high rate, and as a result, consumers are changing the way they make purchase decisions. They are as likely to shop online as they are to shop in-store. When they shop in person, they use their mobile devices to check trend and style information, compare prices, and share photos and opinions on their social networks. Although they shop on multiple channels, they expect highly personalized service on all of them. The customer decision journey has become cross-channel, and demands business integration to support it. Salesforce is helping innovative companies like ALDO lead the way to the future of retail (Salesforce, N.d.)."
Although ALDO has a strong history of social media engagement, the target is constantly moving. This research covers some of the fashion industry's best practices relative to social media presence before making its final recommendations for the top three social media channels for the upcoming year.
Conclusion and Strategic Priorities
By focusing on the fashion industry's social media innovators, the three media channels above are suggested by priority to represent the focus of ALDO's social media campaigns over the next year. Facebook should serve as the cornerstone given its unmatched integration capabilities and broad consumer reach. Reddit, though surprising, presents a highly credible and direct engagement channel with demonstrated success among comparable fashion brands. Pinterest rounds out the strategy by offering conversion-friendly features that can translate visual brand content into measurable website traffic and sales. Together, these three platforms offer ALDO a balanced, data-informed approach to sustaining its social media momentum in an increasingly competitive retail landscape.
