One particular reason these efforts must be made is the limited nature of natural resources, which are being consumed at too fast a pace and will no longer be able to support life for future generations. This topic is inexhaustible and extremely complex, but in order to grasp its simplest principles, it is first necessary to understand the role of natural resources within modern society. The most relevant example is offered by coal.

Before launching into a discussion of coal, it is necessary to understand the resource, its importance, and its complexities. Most importantly, coal is a nonrenewable source of energy. It is essentially a fossil fuel created over hundreds of millions of years from the decomposition of plant matter (National Energy Education Development Program). In more technical terms, "coal is a complex mixture of organic chemical substances containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in chemical combination, together with smaller amounts of nitrogen and sulfur. This organic part of coal has associated with it various amounts of moisture and minerals" (by Design, 2004).

The Evolution of Coal in Society

Thesis: Coal is the source of energy and development that has set the foundation of the modern community. Humanity's excessive reliance on natural resources has, however, generated environmental instabilities, and it is now necessary to develop and implement newer and more efficient strategies to ensure environmental stability.

It is uncertain when coal was first used, but it is generally accepted that it had been used on a smaller scale by various groups and individuals throughout history. The Chinese are estimated to have used coal to smelt metals as early as 1000 B.C.; the Romans were mining coal in Great Britain by 400 A.D.; and Native Americans were using it before the arrival of Columbus.

Coal was used extensively in Great Britain for two specific reasons. First, it generated more heat than an equivalent amount of wood. Second, the British population used wood to construct ships, homes, and other structures, and wood quickly became insufficient. "They needed an alternative fuel source, and they had large coal deposits, many of which were located at or near the surface. The shift from wood to coal in Britain would eventually have profound consequences for the world" (Tabak, 2009).

Coal mining became a full industry during the 1500s, and it was not until the nineteenth century that it became globally popular through expansion to various countries. Between 1835 and 1882, for instance, the amount of mined coal increased from 36 million tons per year to 422 million tons per year. By the early 1900s, coal had become the main source of energy, generating an estimated 95 percent of commercial energy; 4 percent was generated by oil and gas, and the remaining 1 percent came from hydraulic sources (Singh, 2007).

Aside from creating sustainability and improving living conditions, coal also created a context in which the labor force could better protect its rights. The use of coal boosted the Industrial Revolution, which in turn led to the creation of factories and the migration of populations from rural areas to urban centers in search of better lives. Once in the cities, however, people were often exploited by factory owners. The early days of the modern labor force were marked by long hours, low wages, unsanitary conditions, and hard physical labor for women and children.

The Current Impact of Coal on People

The sustained development of communities required coal, and coal was collected and processed by hardworking individuals. The nations' dependency on coal allowed workers to form unions and advocate for their rights. In this sense, coal helped lay the foundation of the modern labor movement (Tabak, 2009).

Today, coal continues to be a primary source of energy. At the most basic level, coal is used to generate heat that warms homes, offices, and other spaces, and also allows people to cook their meals (Nersesian, 2007). Efforts were initially made to reduce dependency on coal by using oil as the main energy source, but this approach proved unsustainable when oil prices rose dramatically at the turn of the twentieth century. Coal once again became the primary source in the effort to reduce dependency on oil.

A general look at the American relationship with coal reveals the following key points:

The need for energy increases at an average rate of 2 percent per year. More than 55 percent of the energy produced in the United States is generated through coal burning. The use of low-cost coal produces low-cost energy and greater energy affordability for the population. The use of coal to create energy generates social and economic advantages, including the creation of jobs, the reduction of unemployment, support for a competitive economy that can produce goods and deliver services at lower costs, higher living standards for the population, and a reduction in dependence on oil. Modern coal-based energy generation is more environmentally friendly than in the past, as newer and more efficient technologies have been developed and introduced, with further improvements in pollution reduction and sustainability expected in the future (Leer and Anderson, 1997).
