College Readiness: Goals, Career Plans, and Self-Reflection

Who I Am Now

I am a business management graduate currently working as a trucking dispatcher for Pepsi. My role involves the management and organization of various processes, including the collection, routing, and dispatch of cargo and loads to vendors and clients. This is a deeply fulfilling career because it allows me to deploy the skills I acquired in the academic realm to meet my employer's business objectives while also satisfying the needs of a diverse clientele. I also value working alongside a motivated and dedicated team of colleagues and partners.

Friends and colleagues have often described me as outgoing, industrious, and empathic. I am also an effective communicator who values teamwork. These attributes have enabled me to perform well in my current role — particularly because the position requires close collaboration among multiple stakeholders, including managers, supervisors, drivers, suppliers, and clients. The ability to work with others and communicate in clear, meaningful ways is therefore essential to success in this field. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, dispatchers play a critical coordination role within transportation and logistics operations, underscoring the importance of these interpersonal competencies.

There are three key long-term goals I wish to accomplish within the next ten years.

To enhance the probability of success in my professional aspirations, I will need to develop specific skills and capabilities. These include the ability to generate relevant documentation such as freight bills, the ability to plan routes and schedule drivers, and a sound working knowledge of the logistics industry more broadly.

My Long-Term Goals

I intend to start my own trucking business. There are wide-ranging benefits to owning and managing one's own company. In my case, launching a trucking enterprise would give me the opportunity to implement ideas quickly and drive the business forward on my own terms. Being my own boss would also go a long way toward motivating my performance and, by extension, my productivity. Furthermore, running my own business would place me in a stronger position to achieve financial independence.

I have always wanted to make a positive impact on society. I firmly believe that we can all contribute toward making the world — and our immediate communities — a better place. With that in mind, I intend to explore ways in which I can use my profession for the betterment of others. For instance, I could actively seek opportunities to deploy technology to reduce delivery and shipment costs. In my view, this would have a meaningful impact on the wellbeing of end consumers, particularly at a time when many people have less disposable income as a result of the global economic downturn.

Within 2 years: I will undertake short-term certificate courses to better enhance my professional capabilities in areas relevant to logistics and dispatch management.

Going forward: I will begin reading industry-related literature and materials on an ongoing basis to stay current with trends and best practices.

Possible obstacle: Time constraints. To address this, I will practice better time management through effective planning and scheduling.

Within 2 years: I will familiarize myself with tax policy as it relates to the trucking business, building the foundational knowledge needed to run a compliant and efficient operation.
