Researchers have formed their own opinions on the issue, with some agreeing and others disagreeing that the term "digital divide" accurately captures what is happening in society today.
Racial Disparities and Internet Access
In the article "The Persisting Racial Digital Divide in Internet Access," racial disparities are examined within the context of home internet access and computer ownership. The author argues that such a racial shortfall may have a significant influence on Black students' chances for higher education. Possessing information — or access to information — plays an integral role in the advancement of both a group and an individual. Those who have access to superior information are often those who become successful and powerful. The author suggests that Black and other non-white populations are placed at a disadvantage by being denied that access.
The author adds, "People with little information, or with access only to information doled out by the powerful, tend to be on that account powerless and unsuccessful" (Anonymous, 2010). Those who command knowledge tend to occupy the top of the political and economic pyramid in almost any society, and to some extent this holds true: many of the world's most developed nations also hold the most economic and political power. However, simply having access to information does not automatically equate to success and power. While racial disparities in the digital age create a difficult environment for people of color, access to knowledge is not necessarily the single deciding factor — especially as computers and internet service become available at lower prices than ever before.
Home Computer Technology and Educational Outcomes
In a separate study, Jacob Vigdor examined educational disparities between rich and poor students as they relate to access to computer technology in the home. Vigdor finds that while many assume giving students home computer and internet access will improve their academic performance, the evidence does not support this assumption. When low-income students are provided with high-speed internet and home computers, the data suggest that reading and math achievement gaps widen rather than narrow. As Vigdor and Ladd (2010) write, "we also demonstrate that the introduction of home computer technology is associated with modest but statistically significant and persistent negative impacts on student math and reading test scores." In other words, providing universal home access to high-speed internet and computers may worsen, rather than resolve, educational disparities.
Several factors may explain this outcome. The first is media and entertainment: students who previously lacked high-speed internet suddenly gain access to streaming services for music, television, and film, all at low cost. Rather than being engaged in schoolwork, many children become absorbed in screen-based entertainment. The second factor is social media. Social media platforms exist primarily online and cultivate an addictive environment in which young people become preoccupied with observing others and sharing their own lives. While access to knowledge can play a role in a person's success, it is only one piece of a much larger puzzle.
Vigdor's research thus presents a counterargument to the assumption that closing the digital divide through home technology will improve educational outcomes. His findings suggest that the manner and context in which technology is accessed matters as much as access itself.
Conclusion: Beyond the Digital Divide
In the end, people are left behind for reasons that extend well beyond the presence or absence of digital technology. While technology can certainly help, it is already made freely available through public libraries. Motivation, a genuine desire for education, and access to meaningful opportunities — these factors create a divide far more profound than a digital one ever could. Addressing the root causes of inequality requires more than a broadband connection; it demands attention to the social, economic, and structural conditions that shape people's lives.
